As a kid, sick days used to be the best thing ever when it came to my video game playing time. To me, every minute I wasn’t in school was a minute I could spend playing video games. Instead of taking the road to recovery through sleep and chicken noodle soup, I played video games all day long. Maybe then I shouldn’t have been surprised that a fever would knock me out of commission for a good week.
As an adult, though I do game every now and then when I’m sick, it’s definitely not the same as it used to be.
I don’t know about you, but I find that as I get older, sickness takes a lot more out of me than it used to. I appreciate bedtime and chicken noodle soup a lot more now than I did then as a means to better health. When I was younger, I could overcome most illnesses to play something as intensive as Street Fighter. Nowadays, trying to play a game that’s as physically and mentally intensive as Street Fighter while sick just wears me out so fast. If I do game when I’m sick, I try to play more slow-paced games that don’t require twitch reflexes or intense thought process.
This is assuming I actually get the time to game while I’m sick. Due to my line of work, sometimes my sick days are spent working rather than resting. It’s counter-productive in a way, as stressing myself out while I’m sick only keeps me out of commission longer, but sometimes the work just needs to get done at a certain time.
Most recently, I have gotten into the habit of having my iPhone or iPad by my bedside when I’m sick. I find that having one of those in bed is a great way to stay connected or entertained without getting up.
Does gaming still factor into your sick days? If so what games or types of games do you like to play when you’re sick?
I’m a vegetarian so to hell with chicken soup, cabbage soup is where it’s at <=l:-/.
To answer your question, when I am sick I don't find it as hard to pull myself to a controller / keyboard as you do I suppose. But I do find it hard to invest myself into a tense title like Bioshock or Dead Space but I guess this attitude leaves you when you have work and payment etc to worry about. I can't recall the last time I enjoyed a game while sick, maybe because we just can't live in the moment and enjoy it for the time being because we know that after the illness blows over we have to get back to what ever it was we have to do, bummer :C. That's just me of coarse.
