Ms. Marvel #1 came into the scene as a breath of fresh air. It could have simply rested on the fact that she’s not your typical all-American superhero, but it was also a well written and well drawn comic in its own right. Issue #2 continues where she left off, having just physically transformed into the iconic Ms. Marvel.
What I love about this issue is that despite her appearance, she’s still very much the same quirky and likeable teen girl on the inside. She still doesn’t have a grasp for the powers she has, nor did she anticipate the realities of her current situation. It was genuinely funny to read about how mortified she was over the fact that the costume doesn’t come with underwear.
Even as she comes to grips with things, she does manage to put her new powers to good use. In the grand scheme of things, it probably won’t be remembered as being that big of a deal, but the way in which it’s presented is a perfect stepping stone for the character. At the end of it all, she still has to find a way to sneak home and potentially deal with the wrath of her conservative Muslim parents who don’t want her out partying.
Despite being grounded in the same universe as Carol Danvers and Captain America, the new Ms. Marvel story is something that still feels real and relatable. This is done through a strongly-realized main character in Kamala, a great plot and quality art to match. Ms. Marvel #2 is another hit for the series and hopefully a sign of things to even better things to come!
