Gaming Collections and Physical Space

When it comes to collecting gaming stuff, I’ve had the factor of physical space on my side. Having lived in my parent’s house, there’s been enough space to house all of the gaming stuff I could buy. I will not go into specifics, but over the years, I have amassed an above-average sized collection of video game stuff. It may not be as crazy as the picture above, but the end effect would probably be the same if I were to take such a shot with my stash.

Up until recently, I’ve always had dreams of having a nice big game collection to call my own. As I’ve unpacked my gaming stuff into Steff and I’s new condo, the realities of keeping a big collection are starting to settle in.

As far as living spaces go, this new condo is the right place for Steff and I in terms of location, size and budget. I’m really happy with the place overall, as is she. However, as we essentially play Tetris with our current stash of things, its going to get really hard justifying a large chunk of real estate towards gaming stuff. As it stands, my CD collection has been locked away in storage indefinitely cause we just don’t have the room for it.

I think we have enough space for me to keep up with the latest and greatest. However, whatever plans I may have had to build up the ultimate retro gaming collection will likely be put on hold until we have more real estate to work with.

The other factor in play here is digital distribution. At some point, virtually every game we love is going to be available through digital distribution. While there will be people who will always value the possession of the game in its physical form, most people will be more than happy to ditch their physical copies for the convenience of being able to play everything off of one box.

Does the issue of physical space impact the way you buy or play video games? I’d love to hear from you in the comments!

Haha, it’s funny I’m reading this now, because I JUST bought a new shelf to hold my Xbox 360 games because I ran out of room on my other one. I’ve been collecting for almost a decade now and just trying to find where in the Hell to put each game has become a challenge. I… have too many games. And now you’ve got me all worried about moving to a new place and not having the space form them all :p

Do you have any plans on moving in the near future?

Planning on moving to California with my girlfriend after summer. That’ll be a long haul…

Wow, that really is a long haul. Any particular reason for the cross-country move, if I may ask?

She’s from California so we’re moving in together after college 🙂 Should be exciting.
