Sporting a ridiculously long title, All-New X-Men/Indestructible Hulk/Superior Spider-Man: The Arms of the Octopus is a three-part special starring…yeah, I’m not going to list them all off again. I can’t speak for how they fit within the continuities of Hulk and Spider-Man, but this does fit within the All New X-Men timeline after issue #11. Our mutant blasts from the past take a trip to Times Square that’s rudely interrupted by a young Doctor Octopus. Did he somehow make the jump to the present day too? Spider-Man and Hulk get involved to put down this menace.

New X-Men Book 2 Review
Grant Morrison’s off-kilter take on Marvel’s mutants continues in New X-Men Book 2. This time, Cyclops and Emma Frost must stop John Sublime from harvesting mutant body parts in order to create superhuman soldiers. Some unexpected visitors at the front door of Xavier’s school are greeted by an even more unexpected host. Meanwhile, the conflict between Professor X and Cassandra Nova escalates deep into the mind of this new threat.
New X-Men Book 1 Review
I was forewarned about Grant Morrison’s New X-Men going into Book 1. Considered to be the start of the modern era for Marvel’s mutant team, he many of the things that have defined the X-Men up to that point and unceremoniously kicks them to the curb, from the old uniforms, old perspectives, and much more. For some, this was a kick in the pants that the franchise sorely needed. For others, this dramatic departure from the status quo was the worst.
Where do I stand when it comes to the most divisive run in X-Men history? Only having read the first book, it’s too early for me to pass judgment on the series as a whole. Having said that, I think this first book is great.
Astonishing X-Men Ultimate Collection Book 2 Review
Though the Astonishing X-Men series ran from 2004 to 2013, Marvel has only given Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s run on the series the Ultimate Collection treatment. I found Book 1 to be great overall, with the Gifted storyline being one of the best X-Men tales ever. Book 2 may not hit the highs of its predecessor, but it still delivers one of the better X-Men reads out there.
X-Men: First Class Vol. 1: Tomorrow’s Brightest Review
From the X-Men: First Class movie, to X-Men: Season One, to the current Marvel Now X-Men universe, the classic team of Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Ice Man and Angel have been very busy of late. One of their first retro revival efforts was X-Men: First Class Vol. 1: Tomorrow’s Brightest. This 8-issue limited run was comprised of new one-off stories that took place during their heyday. Though the concept may have been novel at the time, I don’t think its execution gives it much to stand on beyond that.
Wolverine: Weapon X Review
During a long stretch of time when Marvel was reluctant to tell the definitive origin story of its most famous mutant, readers only had two comics as reference: the self-titled Wolverine and Weapon X. The latter of those is tells the tale of how Logan was abducted by a shady government organization and groomed to become the ultimate killing machine.
X-23 Vol. 1: The Killing Dream Review
Do clones have souls? This existential question is the driving force behind X-23 Vol. 1: The Killing Dream. Conceived and raised as a killing machine, Laura Kinney goes on a quest to find her own path through life. Conceptually sound, the actual execution of issues 1-6 of X-23 fall a bit short in almost every respect.
The Amazing Spider-Man #1 Review
Will the real Peter Parker please stand up? Unbeknownst to most of the world during the recently-completed Superior Spider-Man, Doctor Octopus’ conscious was actually inside Peter’s body due to a last ditch effort on Doc’s part to cheat death. Before Peter ultimately regained control, Doc Ock had made some dramatic changes to the status quo that he must now deal with. This extra-large Amazing Spider-Man #1 picks up shortly after Peter Parker gets his body back. Through its feature story and a number of bonus vignettes, this debut issue lays the groundwork for the world that the good doctor left behind.
X-Men: No More Humans Review
Within the blink of an eye, all of the humans on Earth disappear. For some mutants (I’m looking at you, Magneto), this is the best thing ever. Others, however, won’t let this brazen act of mass kidnapping or genocide go unpunished. Despite their differences, an all-star cast of mutants come together to solve this mystery in X-Men: No More Humans. Created by Mike Carey and Salvador Larocca, this is the first X-Men graphic novel since God Loves, Man Kills, which was released in 1982.
X-Men: Days of Future Past Review
Having been burned not too long ago on X-Men comics that didn’t stand the test of time, I stepped into X-Men: Days of Future Past with caution. It’s reputation as being one of the best X-Men story arcs has bubbled up to the point where it’s the focal point of the next movie, but my time reading other 80s era X-Men omnibus wasn’t all that entertaining due to how much the medium has evolved since then. I could have just left this one be, but knowing that the movie was coming soon and that many herald it as one of the best, I figured I should give the best of the old stuff a shot.
