When it comes to the Street Fighter IV series, Akuma has been my main man. I’ve played over 300 hours of that game using him as my guy. I know the ins and outs to make him work, and all of the weaknesses others can exploit to beat him. I worked my way up to one of the top 300 Akuma players on XBOX Live in North America. He was even my go-to character when I won my first tournament match at Fan Expo.
Since that tournament though, I’ve been exploring my options. I’ve been dabbling with other characters. After a lot of practice and soul searching, I think it’s time I had a change of heart.
What went wrong between me and arguably the best character in the game? There are a lot of little things thaI hit a wall. I achieved a certain level of success and I couldn’t seem to go beyond that. I knew there was so much more to the character that I could do if I truly dedicated myself to getting better with Akuma, but I feel like I’ve gone as far as I can go. I’ll still keep him in my stash of characters to play as, but moving forward, I don’t see myself using him as my main guy in Super Street Fighter IV. Sorry buddy, we’ll talk again in Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
If I’m not going with Akuma, who will I use as my main? I’ve experimented with the entire cast, and I really like Cammy, Rufus, Dudley, Cody and Adon. However, my new main character is…Rose.
I’m sure that many Street Fighter IV players are shaking their head at this decision. Why would I downgrade from one of the best and most popular character in the game to one of the worst and least popular, according to the tier list? Though I look over the tier list a lot, I don’t really let it dictate who I play as. It’s just about feel and success. Right now I’m really loving Rose’s rush-down tactics, which seem to gel with my play style really well. I’m also winning more consistently and beating people way outside my player point and battle point range. Playing as Rose makes the game feel new again for me.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll probably be knee deep in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but Street Fighter IV will likely still be my main fighting game of choice. It’s been tough letting go, but I think dropping Akuma for Rose will be a good move for me in the long run.
