Though we’ve known about these characters for months (probably earlier than Capcom intended), Jill and Shuma Gorath are finally available as DLC on XBOX Live and PSN. At $5 each, they might be a bit pricey if you’re not interested in either character, but they’re available if you want them. I bought both of them mainly because I’ve been taking this game very seriously of late, and I’d like to get the full character experience out of it.
Having spent a bit of time with both characters in training mode and online, I thought it’d be cool to talk about my early impressions with them. I’m no expert at this game (and definitely not with these characters), but an amateur perspective may still be of value to you. If you’re considering picking these two up (or just want to read about the latest additions to the roster) check out the rest of this post.

Shuma Gorath
Of the two new characters, Shuma Gorath was the easier of the two for me to pick up. I know he was in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, but I never played as him then, so I don’t know how he’s translated into this game. His Magic Series is the standard A, B, C, S from standing, crouching or in the air, which made it easier in that regard to learning the character. His normal moves seem great, but his ground and air dash don’t have the greatest range or mobility. While I’m not comfortable enough yet to know when the best time is to execute his special moves, I think I could pick him up if I put time into him. As an assist, I think his laser assist will probably be the one people use the most. It’s also worth noting that his level 3 hyper combo is an unblockable if you can land it, which most people online don’t know just yet. 😉

Jill Valentine
Jill Valentine is a lot more awkward to me. In a game that’s already very fast, she’s almost too fast for me to handle. I think she might actually be faster than X-23. Unlike Shuma Gorath, her Magic Series is not the standard A, B, C, S, which I still find awkward every time I player a character that doesn’t have it. Her special moves consist of various kick attacks and command grabs, which means you’re going to have to mix it up inside. While her dashes go very far and fast, she doesn’t have an air dash. As an assist, I really like the Arrow Kick, which sends Jill flying through the air Liu Kang style.
In the few matches I played online with them, I got blown up pretty bad. Of the two, I think I was better with Shuma, but I did not fare well either way. Would I continue playing as them? For sure. Do I see them jumping into my main team? I don’t think so, but I won’t know till I try!
