When I first caught wind of this Skylanders iOS game, I immediately thought it would ve nothing more than a crappy cash-in that preyed on fans of the console game. Instead of being a logical consumer and saving my money, I forked over the $0.99 to see if my assumptions were true. To my surprise, I will not be reporting to you that this is a bad game, cause it’s actually good.
Skylanders: Cloud Patrol is a simple shooting game. You’re taken from screen-to-screen, shooting baddies while avoiding getting hit or shooting bombs. The shooting works well enough as a gameplay mechanic to build a $0.99 game around, and it’s fun to try and beat your previous score.
The beauty of Cloud Patrol however, are the RPG elements that augment the core experience. Just like the console games, there are a lot of opportunities to collect loot and power up your Skylander(s). You can play through the game numerous times to collect more loot and achieve more goals or you can spend real money to improve faster.

Just like the console games, the biggest motivator to spend more money are the Skylander characters themselves. Each day, using Skylanders of a certain element will net you more money as you play. If you don’t have a Skylander with that matching element, you’re out of luck. Because you only start with one Skylander, odds are you won’t get to reap the rewards of that bonus for awhile. While additional characters can be unlocked through regular play, the currency you need to unlock them is fairly scarce, which makes the option of paying real money for characters more appealing.
If you want to spend real money to enhance the core experience, that’s your prerogative. But even if you don’t want to expand on your $0.99 investment, Skylanders: Cloud Patrol is a good game at that price.
I’ve never played Skylanders, but it sounds like a fun game. Still, I don’t think want to spend money inside a game.
