To Buy or Not to Buy: Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Set

I have a hard time abstaining from purchasing items with the Street Fighter name on them. I’ve bought figurines, t-shirts, posters, fightsticks, and over 20 Street Fighter games – including Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight. I’ve always joked with my girlfriend that if Capcom released Street Fighter branded rocks, I’d probably buy those too. As a life-long fanboy of the franchise, the purchase of Street Fighter merchandise rarely gives me pause.

But then I saw the gargantuan Street Fighter 25th Anniversary set.

Available on September 18th, this set is one of the most jam-packed limited editions I’ve ever seen for a video game. It includes:

– Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
– Street Fighter III: Third Strike
– Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition (including all DLC)
– Street Fighter X Tekken (including all character and swap costume DLC)
– New Street Fighter documentary
– Street Fighter IV animated movie
– Super Street Fighter IV animated movie
– All episodes of the Street Fighter animated series (yes!)
– Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie
– Light up Ryu statue
– 11-disc soundtrack
– 64-page hardcover art book
– Ryu’s belt
– Certificate of authenticity

I’m shocked that Capcom was able to put in all of that stuff within a $150 price tag. The games themselves combined with their DLC would be valued at over $150. Looking at that package as a whole had me virtually frothing at the mouth.

However, $150 isn’t something I can just throw down willy nilly, especially when I already own every game in that set. For me, I would be buying it primarily for all of the collectors items included. Are those alone worth $150 to me? I also have a fundamental hatred of limited edition video game sets. Do I become a hypocrite for going all-in on a set that genuinely interests me? Most importantly, in my new life as an adult with bills to pay, does the $150 investment mean I skip rent, or eat ramen noodles for the next month?

But then there’s the intangible cost. Having consulted with my girlfriend on this, she says I’d forever regret not buying this if I let it pass me by. She’s probably right.

What do you think about the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collector’s Set? Let’s discuss in the comments!

I’m not one to buy collectors editions too often. While I usually want all that cool stuff, I can pass on the extra swag knowing that the game alone is what I really need. That being said, this collectors box is just too good for me to pass up. For all the games, soundtracks, and other goodies it comes with, I think $150 is insanely inexpensive. I’m getting myself a copy and I think your girlfriend is right on this one.

We’ll see if I end up doing this eventually. Due to the way timing worked out, I (arguably impulsively) threw down a pre-order on a…bigger gaming related thing…and can’t justify doing both right now. Will discuss that soon 😉
