Unboxing the PlayStation 5

The wait is over!

As I frantically mashed on the F5 key while staring at my tracking page, the doorbell rang. Steff opened the door to a delivery person wielding a giant box for me. My PlayStation 5 got here on launch day!

As of writing, it’s 2:09 PM. I could be playing it right now. Instead, I will share the unboxing experience with you! Let’s crack this thing open!

My First Game(s) for Each Console

As November draws near, the hype for new consoles is hitting a fever pitch. I can’t wait to get my hands on my PlayStation 5 next month and experience the next generation of gaming.

All of this excitement got me thinking about my past experiences with new hardware. In particular, the games I got with each new toy. To the best of my memory, here’s

Why I Chose the PlayStation 5 Over the Xbox Series X (For Now)

For the past year, I’ve been saving up for one of the two next generation consoles. With each passing reveal, I made notes and weighed my options. Recently, I made up my mind and locked in a pre-order for a PlayStation 5.

Really excited to get new hardware in November! While there are a lot of great reasons to pick up an Xbox Series X, from superior hardware, to Xbox Game Pass, better backwards compatibility, and their recent acquisition of Bethesda, here’s why I chose one over the other for the time being.

Highlights From the EB Games Sidewalk Sale

EB Games is in the midst of clearing out a bunch of its inventory through sidewalk sales. Admittedly, I wasn’t expecting much from them. However, the one by me happened to rent out an entire store space in the mall to fit all of the deals in. Here are a few things that caught my eye!

Green Man Gaming has made cost-per-hour as a value metric a thing

Back in 2010, I tackled the hypothetical-at-the-time metric of cost-per-hour relative to valuing a video game. Even in my cursory glance at the challenge, I poked a few glaring holes in the idea to the point where it didn’t make sense to me as a worthwhile metric. In spite of that, it appears that Green Man Gaming has implemented cost-per-hour as a metric on its storefront. No, they didn’t find the magic workaround to make the metric make sense, and I vehemently disagree with Green Man Gaming’s CEO Paul Sulyok’s defense of its implementation.

Injustice 2 Legendary Edition is Coming on March 27, 2018

Last year, Superman and friends smashed their way back onto millions of consoles off the strength of Injustice 2. Unfortunately, despite my rabid fandom for the first game, financial reasons caused me to sit this one out. Thankfully for me, and whomever else missed the boat, a new edition of the game is coming on March 27th with all of the DLC characters, a bunch of DLC skins, and an expanded tutorial mode. All of this at the cost of $60 US.

At some point, I will get this version of the game. By the time this launches, I might still be in the midst of Dragon Ball FighterZ fever. But as soon as that subsides, I’ll be there to finally catch up. Is Batman still a good character in this game?

Out Now: The Xbox One X

Looking to regain its footing in the console space, Microsoft unleashes the Xbox One X today. This may not be a full refresh of the Xbox One platform, but the power jump is enough to make it the most powerful console on the market to-date.

Having seen the unit in action at Fan Expo earlier this year, the console is small, sleek, and packs one heck of a graphical punch. However, its benefits still don’t provide the leap we’ve seen in the past. At this point, it appears that we’ve reached the point of diminishing returns when it comes to graphical leaps.

Furthermore, that price tag is steep. At $500 US, it’s a tough bullet to bite relative to what you’re getting. Nonetheless, I do hope that this could be the kick in the pants that gets the Xbox back on track. Coming off of the Xbox 360, Microsoft has gone out of their way to undermine all of their success with a plethora of poor decisions that has compromised their platform. Having them as a more viable player in the scene would only make the entire market as a whole better!

Ranking the Street Fighter V Season 2 Characters

After season 1 of Street Fighter V‘s DLC offering brought back six familiar faces, season 2 made a bold move by only bringing back one legacy character. The remaining five slots went to newcomers. This ranking is based on how I feel they impact the game as a whole. Not just how cool they look or how often we see them in tournament play, but the entirety of what they bring to the experience. Let’s count them down!

Out Now: Super NES Classic

This holiday season, some will be chasing after a Nintendo Switch. Others may be shelling out their hard-earned bucks on an Xbox One X. For me, the must-have gaming hardware this year is the Super NES Classic. Having sung the platform’s praises over the past month, we now have the chance to relive the memories of yesteryear or experience the legendary console for the first time.

That is, if you’re able to get your hands on one.
