What If BioShock Infinite Wasn’t A Shooter?

I’m smitten with Bioshock Infinite. The game does such an amazing job of pushing the boundaries of what game worlds, characters and stories can be. Though it also does its combat really well, it also feels like the most antiquated and gamey part of the experience. For a game that pushes so many aspects of the medium forward, what if it could push the gameplay as well?

I’m not even necessarily asking for it to be a revolutionary first-person shooter. But what if we could apply this quality of a world and storytelling to other types of interactive experiences? Imagine a Walking Deadstyle experience in this world. Or a Portal-style pluzle platformer? Or maybe something completely out of the blue?

Irrational Games has created something truly special with Infinite. Rarely do games get the mix of a giant budget and creative freedom to create something like this. However, from a very specific perspective, it almost feels like an opportunity that could have been used to make anything other than a shooter to push every aspect of the medium forward. If this wasn’t a shooter, what would you want it to be?
