Video Game Characters Who Wear Masks

During these uncertain times, one of the best things we can do to protect ourselves and others is to wear a mask. There’s no shortage of evidence out there that show how effective they are. I’ve been wearing a mask for months now and I agree with my government’s laws around masks in public spaces.

But don’t just follow my lead. You can be just like these star video game characters who also wear masks!

[NOTE: Since I have essentially no experience with Majora’s Mask, it does not appear on this list. However, I acknowledge it as being arguably the most iconic mask in all of gaming!]

Much of the Mortal Kombat Cast…er, Kast

When I conceived of this list, Scorpion and Sub-Zero of Mortal Kombat were top-of-mind. Sure, Sub-Zero went through a phase where he didn’t wear a mask, but both kombatants have been protecting their mouth and nose from germs long before it was cool.

If you take a step back, many of the Mortal Kombat characters wear some sort of face covering. All of the male ninjas have had phases where they wore masks. Kitana and Mileena mostly wear masks. Erron Black goes above-and-beyond the traditional cowboy aesthetic by wearing something a bit more substantial. Kabal has them beat though, as his full-face rig also acts as a respirator.

Ibuki

Vega might be the most obvious masked warrior from the Street Fighter series. During these times, his full-face hard mask may not be the best option. I’d imagine it to be difficult to breath in. Furthermore, it has a knack for falling off.

Instead, follow ninja student Ibuki’s lead instead. She wears a cloth face covering much closer in line with what we’d wear. Also, it never falls off in the heat of battle!

Soldier 76

Everyone, heal up! Soldier 76 shows that he cares for his squad by not only sharing his Biotic Field. He keeps himself and others protected by wearing a high-tech mask that also coordinates with his outfit. Bonus points for protecting his eyes with the visor. As long he and the rest of the Overwatch crew are able to maintain social distancing within the biotic field, everything should be fine.

Tali’Zorah

Tali’Zorah is a is a fan favourite from the Mass Effect series. Even if you never see her face, her charming personality shines through. As much as we want to see what she looks like under the mask, her reasons for keeping her face covered are as good as any. As a quarian, her species is immunocompromised, making any sort of exposure to the outside world dangerous. We too can wear masks to not only protect ourselves, but to protect others who are also immunocompromised.

Overcoming this pandemic requires a team effort. By wearing a mask, we help to reduce the spread of the virus, minimize the strain on our health care system, and fast-track our return to whatever the new normal will be once we overcome this. Cover up, practice social distancing, and stay home as much as you can!

As Arthur in Red Redemption II you can also don a mask! Well, it’s more of a cloth covering. But it does the trick for robberies etc. And would probably work in present times, too.
