Ridiculous Fishing is the latest iOS game to catch a ton of positive buzz from the gaming press. Had I not heard this game talked about on every podcast I listen to over the past few weeks, I probably would have let this one slip by. Then again, sometimes the gaming press has led me astray. Did this one win me over like it supposedly won over every gaming journalist on the planet?
The gameplay loop is very straightforward. You cast your lure into the water and tilt your phone left and right to avoid touching any of the fish you encounter on the way down. Once you touch a fish or run out of line, you reel your lure in and try to grab as many point-scoring fish on the way up. Once the fish are above water, you pull out your gun and shoot them out of the sky. The shock factor wears off almost immediately, though it is entertaining nonetheless. Along the way, you can earn upgrades that will help you score more points, such as a chainsaw lure that can cut through fish on the way down and a longer fishing line. These upgrades are smartly designed to extend the life of the experience.
Not quite sure why this game in particular has caught the buzz that it has, though to its credit, the game is fun. It makes smart use of the platform its on and I’ll definitely be playing more of it.
