Summertime Bits and Bites

Summer is about as close to an off-season for video games for me as it gets. Sure, I’ve dabbled a bit in a bunch of different games on different platforms over the past few weeks, but I’ve been very much caught up in the spoils of the season, such as good weather, outdoor parties and street basketball.

Gaming and writing about gaming have taken a serious nose-dive on my list of things-to-do of late. For the few people who follow my blog regularly, I apologize. I’m hoping I can write more in detail about what’s happened and what’s to come, but for now, I will give you some snippets of things that I’ve been up to gaming-wise and my thoughts on current gaming events.

It’s happening right now. I watched the Microsoft press conference from work. I think I would have had more enjoyment if I just put in 100% of my attention to my work. I really don’t care for Kinect and it’s “Minority Report” inspired interface or it’s bootleg Wii mini-game collections. However, I’d love to play Harmonix’s “Dance Central”, which looks to deliver on the potential of “Just Dance”. At a rumored $150 though, I’m definitely not jumping in just for that one game. Here’s to hoping for more exciting stuff from Nintendo and Sony.

Rock Band 3

Keyboards? Real six-string guitar support? Do want.

iPad!

I came. I saw. iCaved. That money I saved up for a Playstation 3? It all disappeared after I tried out an iPad for five minutes on the day it came out. So far, I think it’s a really cool piece of nerd bling that does certain things extremely well. However, it definitely is pricey for what you’re getting and the good iPad-specific apps are few and far between at the moment. Right now I’m using it mostly to surf the net on the couch, play expanded iPhone games and to create music using iSequence, which is totally awesome.

iPod Touch Games

The purchase of the iPad has sparked my furious app store purchasing. I’ve bought Ninjatown: Trees of Doom, which is a great game at $0.99. I also picked up Fifa World Cup 2010 and NBA Live for the same price. I also bought The Game of Life for $2, which is a great deal if you enjoy the board game. I’m hoping to write about all of these in more detail in the future.

“Real” Games

I have copies of Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Green Day: Rock Band in my house. I’ve played more Green Day than Super Mario, but I can’t really judge the latter just yet. As for the former, it really comes down to how much you like Green Day.

If I get more time like this, I’ll definitely write more about gaming stuff soon.
