Trade Away Post: September 2010 Edition

Trading games in is not a practice I regularly take part in. I generally like to keep my stuff and would like to think that I only buy games worth owning forever. However, sometimes I roll the dice on certain titles and it doesn’t always work out for any number of reasons.

I recently went to my local video game store to trade in a bunch of games. Here are the games I got rid of and the reasoning behind letting them go.

Soulcalibur IV

As a fan of Soulcalibur II on the Gamecube, I picked this up for real cheap, thinking that it would be nice to have a diversion from Super Street Fighter IV every now and then. Instead, I’ve just spiraled even deeper into Street Fighter, and what’s left of my fighting game time goes to BlazBlue: Continuum Shift or Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. It was fun while I played it, aside from some quirks here and there, but I didn’t see myself ever playing it again or worth keeping.

Tekken 6 (XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3 version)

For a series I knew I didn’t like, I sure did end up with a bunch of copies of it. I obtained these copies after buying the limited edition bundles, which came with a Hori fighstick. The fightsticks are great for Super Street Fighter IV. As for Tekken, I was hoping that this could be primer material for the upcoming Street Fighter X Tekken. Instead, it served only as a reminder that I do not like playing Tekken games at all.

PGR 4

Realistic racing games are not my scene. I knew this well before I purchased PGR 4. However, around the time I wanted to renew my XBOX Live subscription, the XBOX LIve membership bundle was on sale. Essentially, I got a headset and PGR 4 for free with the purchase of a 1-year subscription. I had a little bit of fun with it, but I knew that I wouldn’t really get anywhere with it.

Mirror’s Edge

I really wanted to like this game. I still think the idea of first person parkour action could be awesome. At its best, Mirror’s Edge delivered a sensation unlike anything else I’d played before. At its worst, it raised my frustration level to dizzying heights. I still look forward to a sequel at some point, but this one is a no-go for me. I hope the developers can learn from the mistakes from this game and make the sequel as awesome as the original could have been.

Okami

This was a game I really wanted to support based on principle. It was a critically acclaimed game that didn’t sell so hot. I picked it up for cheap, hoping that I could see for myself what the hype was about.

Unfortunately, I only played it once and never really felt motivated to go back. I’m horribly intimidated by the game’s length (supposedly 40+ hours) and it didn’t do much for me in my first go-around to make me want to play it for that long.

Instead of letting it collect dust on the shelf or waiting for a rainy day, I’ve decided I would get more out of it by putting the credit towards something else.

What would that new thing be? Stay tuned to In Third Person to find out what I picked up!
