Jett Vs. Episode 4 – Trapped

Welcome to episode 3 of Jett Vs., a series of blog posts where I post one of my Super Street Fighter IV match videos and analyze it for your viewing and reading pleasure.

If for some reason you’ve been hotly anticipating the day when I’d post a video of myself losing, you’re in luck. Not only do I take an L, but I go down in flames.

About Rose vs. Vega

According to the January 2011 IPLAYWINNER tier list, they have Rose vs. Vega at 5-5. Unless I’m playing as Rufus, I usually have trouble with Vega. Outside of the obvious wall dive shenanigans, Vega has some really great pokes that I always seem to get caught by. I haven’t played enough of this match as Rose to have a real solid game plan.

About The Match

Based on points alone, it’s a good sign that I’m in over my head. This guy was closing in on 10k, which is something I’ve never even come close to reaching. In round 1, I was poked to death. In round 2, it got even worse. While it looks like I’m losing to a guy just hitting one button over and over again, it’s actually more complicated than that. He’s employing a high-level tactic called a frame trap. There are a number of different ways to execute a frame trap, but the idea is the same, regardless of how you execute it. Basically, you execute a series of moves that will counter hit your opponent should they try and hit you in between the sequence. In this case, he used standing light kick, slight walk forward into standing light kick repeatedly. Some characters, such as Cody, have more intricate frame traps that work really well and look really cool.

In this case, all he needed was a simple frame trap to shut me down. I tried a few things that failed horribly before finally jumping out of the way. By then though, it was too late. I have used frame traps in the past, and recognized fairly quickly what he was doing, but I couldn’t answer it fast enough. Maybe next time I’ll be ready for it!
