Early Impressions of God of War II

Even though I was many years late to the party, once I started playing the first God of War, I finished it in relatively short order. That first God of War game was pretty awesome and I was excited to jump into God of War II. However, I thought it would be best for me to take a break from the series and take care of some other games before I jump back into it.

Though I’ve been picking at God of War II for at least a month now, I don’t have much to show for my time. I’m not very far into it, but I’m already considering skipping it for God of War III. What’s happening?

Not having played a “God of War-style” game before, the original game struck me as fresh, new and exciting. While the early portions of God of War II are on par with the original (if not a little better), it’s just not grabbing me like the first one did. So far, it’s not doing enough to separate itself from the original for me. It feels like I’m running into the same types of action sequences and puzzles all over again. In a time when I’ve got so much to play, I’m not sure that I want to put in the effort to complete this one. At least with God of War III, the added power of the PS3 will lend itself to bigger jumps in gameplay.

In Third Person readers, what should I do? I think I’ll continue to play it a bit longer, but I already have God of War III available to me. Should I just skip the second game and jump to the third? Does the second game get better?

Are you kidding me Jett? The second is fantastic and so much better than the first. I am quite shocked to be hearing this fro you! We God of War players play the series for the fun combat and boss fights, there are a bunch of fun and very memorable moments scattered about in the game but I can understand that you can’t take the pacing for it is a little bit methodical and brutally suspensive but that’s the whole point man. We also play it for the incredible and original story including the breath taking setting. How many games do you know can pull off an atmosphere as well as God of War does? Don’t let this game pass you by, don’t just skip it and look up the ending on youtube or straight to God of War 3 because the cinematic in the beginning will spoil it for you. In conclusion, don’t let this incredible masterpiece pass you by, it is probably one of the top ten action games of all time and take it from me the most you have to lose is the story and the incredibly memorable moments and in God of War 3 the cut scenes and character encounters will mean a lot more to you and it helps to understand what is going on. After you are done with the trilogy you should definitely check out the PSP games Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta for even more back story on Kratos or if you want an excuse for playing a little bit more because both games are probably only 7-8 hours long. Well I hope I helped out Jett and it’s great to finally get back to this site, I don’t know why I ever left. I love your posts and keep it up!

Welcome back! And thanks for the comment! That’s quite the hard sell you wrote on God of War II.

I know I’m in the minority when it comes to God of War II players, but right now it’s not grabbing me. It’s not a shot at it’s overall quality, which I totally recognize as being top-notch. I will give it another shot soon, and hopefully there’s some sort of turning point for me that makes the experience worthwhile.

I hear you Jett and totally understand, I didn’t mean to ravage you with my views if I did, I just meant to say that you should not skip it, yeah sure give it a break because the story is easy to remember and all. It’s that it would be best to do the series justice by giving the games the proper attention or dedication they deserve.
      P.S. Great to Be Back!
