Jett vs. Gabriel6937 in Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Version 2012

In today’s Jett Vs. post, we’ve got a match between my Cammy and Gabriel6937’s Ryu. This was a slobber-knocker of a match that I had fun being a part of. Click through to see the fight and some match analysis from me!

About Cammy vs. Ryu
On paper, it’s generally considered that Cammy vs. Ryu is an even match, as the perception is that neither character has a distinct advantage over the other. I tend to disagree with this sentiment, as I generally feel like as a Cammy player, I have the disadvantage in this match. I think that Ryu has excellent tools to keep Cammy away such as his fireball, uppercut and normal pokes to make this match difficult for her. The only thing Cammy can do is to patiently work her way in and capitalize to the fullest on every opening.

Round 1
Gabriel came at me guns blazing in the first round, and he paid for it large, as I punished everything he did and almost got a perfect on him. However, at 0:24, he throws me into the corner and there’s a complete momentum shift. At 0:25, he jumps in and puts me in a really tricky scenario, where he can vary what side he hits me on and where he lands based on what button he hits and at what point he hits me. I end up guessing wrong and he blasts me with a full combo that ends in an ultra. He tries the same scenario after the ultra, but I’m able to block it correctly and finish him off.

Round 2
Gabriel carries through with the momentum he gained in the first round and pretty much gave me the business in the second. However, at 1:18, as I’m waking up from an ultra, he decides to move in with Ryu’s forward heavy punch. I punish it hard with a wake-up ultra, which makes it anybody’s game. Gabriel closes it out by punishing my jump in with an EX uppercut.

Round 3
Gabriel is once again in control at the start of the match, until the 1:52 mark, where I bait out an uppercut by charging a focus attack and dashing away before he can touch me. I throw him to the ground when he lands and I take back the momentum with a  few huge combos. With about 20% health and at a notable life disadvantage, Gabriel goes for an EX Shoryuken at the 2:07 mark. I’m fairly certain this is an execution error, as I think he meant to do a regular uppercut and FADC out of it. Instead, he goes sailing into the air and I finish him off.

In Hindsight
This a great match that really came down to momentum. Whoever had the hot hand buried the other person in the round. In that final round, whiffing that Shoryuken early on and accidentally going with the EX Shoryuken at the end cost him the match. If I were in Gabriel’s shoes, I would have played a bit more defensively and forced the Cammy player to make mistakes rather than go in guns blazing all the time, cause I think that approach would have made the fight easier for him.
