Far Cry 3 Impressions

What was supposed to be an extreme sports adventure on Rook Island goes horribly wrong when you and your friends are captured by pirates. Some are killed, others are missing, and you barely escape their clutches. Now it’s up to you to free the rest of your friends and get the heck out of there. While the main objective in Far Cry 3 is clear throughout, it’s easy to get sidetracked by the plethora of other experiences to be had. By the time you’ve wrapped up your work, you may have poured in dozens of awesome hours into this expansive open world.

After freeing yourself from the pirate’s prison camp, you’re pretty much free to take on the world however you want. The main missions are doled out in a linear manner, though almost everything else is fair game. These range in variety from sanctioned side missions and races, all the way down to simply wandering around the world and finding out what’s on the other side of that cave you just stumbled upon.

As someone who tries to plow through a never-ending backlog as quickly as possible, I came into this thinking that I’d stay on the straight and narrow path. That fell apart almost immediately. as the allure of radio towers and strongholds was too much. By ascending radio towers, you can see previously hidden areas on the map just like Assassin’s Creed. When you overtake a stronghold, it becomes a fast travel point and a place to manage your gear. Wanting maximum visibility and fast travel points caused me to actively take these out like a fiend. I also loved aimlessly wandering the lush Rook Island environments. It felt like there was something cool at every corner, from secret caves under waterfalls, to komodo dragons stalking me from behind the cover of bushes.

The main missions are really well done and full of exciting moments. They manage to capture a great mix of linear storytelling and setpieces like Uncharted, while keeping many of its open-ended gameplay elements intact. Unfortunately for me, I ran into a forced stealth section late in the game that I just couldn’t beat. Just like Dishonored, I got frustrated, turned the difficulty down to easy, then still couldn’t do it. Despite how awesome of a time I was having up until that point, that was the exact moment where I gave up on it. Still grateful to have tried it, though it’s a bummer that one of my biggest gaming pet peeves strikes again.

I really loved this game. Especially taking the outposts. I remember that stealth mission you were talking about and it did suck. The best part of this game is how many options you have in combat, so to force stealth on you is extra annoying.
