Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is about as sure of a thing as any. Take a hot new Nintendo console and pair it with an updated port of quite possibly the best Mario Kart of all-time and everyone wins. Despite that, I’m having a hard time getting jazzed for this one.
My apprehensions towards the game have everything to do with it being a port of a years-old Mario Kart game. Granted, it’s a fantastic one that many Switch owners who skipped out on the Wii U missed the first time around. To Nintendo’s credit, they’re sweetening the deal with all of the Wii U DLC, new characters, and a proper battle mode with battle-mode-specific tracks. The one glaring flaw of Mario Kart 8 will finally be addressed here. However, I still can’t shake the sense of deja vu I feel when I think about the game.
Don’t get me wrong, I placed my pre-order for this weeks ago and I’m sure my friends and I will have a blast with it. Since we know this is based on the Wii U game, it’s certainly going to be good. However, I was personally hoping to be playing a new installment in the series instead. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for that.
