FanExpo is only a few days away and I can barely hold in my excitement. My girlfriend and I are in for a whole new experience by partaking in this event, and I just want to soak it all in. With that said, there are a few things I’m a bit more pumped about than others. If you’re heading out to FanExpo, hit the cut to see if we’re psyched for the same things. If you currently have no plans to visit, these might be 5 reasons you should check out FanExpo.
FanExpo visitors will have the opportunity to participate in video game tournaments for Modern Warfare 2, Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Street Fighter IV. Having never taken part in one or attended one, I’m really excited to not only be there, but to have the chance to put my Super Street Fighter IV skills to the test. At this point, I don’t think I have a shot at winning, but the thrill of competition alone should be worth it. Ideally, I would like to win a match or two. At the very least, I just hope my girlfriend doesn’t see me get destroyed in front of a large crowd. I don’t think my ego could handle that.
My girlfriend and I are are fans of cosplay. Though neither of us have worn costumes depicting our favourite characters outside of Halloween, I love seeing the passion that people put into their costumes and the passion people put into becoming that persona. I’m hoping there is no shortage of people in costume roaming the show floor and I hope to catch the best-of at the Saturday night Masquerade.
Do I need to justify this? Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar will be there. On top of that, the 1960s Batcycle and Batmobile will be in attendance. This will be extra special for my girlfriend, who is a Batman fanatic. Having Adam West sign some of her 1960s Batman stuff would probably make her life complete.
It should surprise no one that the brunt of my luxury income goes towards nerdy stuff. With over 600 retailers in attendance that specialize in comics, anime, gaming, science fiction and horror, this could be like shopping in the mall of my dreams.
Being a nerd is often an isolated experience for me. I enjoy almost all of my gaming alone at home, I write these posts alone in my bedroom and I don’t really talk to anybody about video games. There have been very few times where I’ve felt like I wasn’t alone in my love for nerdy things. One of those times was when my brother and I were at a Walmart, in line at midnight with like-minded individuals ready to purchase Rock Band 2 the moment it was available. A discussion among strangers ensued and we all clicked immediately because we were all there for the same reason and shared very similar interests. One other time I experienced this feeling of community was when I attended Video Games Live. Besides taking in the awesome orchestral renditions of our favourite music, it was a celebration of a medium we loved. Strangers were talking to each other about games and even playing DS and PSP games together.
FanExpo is projected to have over 65,000 like-minded individuals in attendance. It’s a really cool feeling to be among a large group of people that are in the same place as you for the very same reasons as you. Not only am I looking to be one with the gamer crowd, but I would love to see everyone else celebrate the things they love, whether that be comics, sci-fi, horror or anime.
I may be a bit more excited for these 5 things, but really I’m stoked to experience everything the show has to offer. If FanExpo sounds like something you would be interested in, check out their site for more information.
