Daigo Umehara Coming to Canada?

Ever since I began to seriously follow the fighting game scene, it’s been a dream of mine to face off against Daigo Umehara. Even though I think he’s light-years ahead of me in every way (as far as Street Fighter is concerned), I would be honoured to face-off against the Michael Jordan of Street Fighter.

Due to the huge resurgence of the fighting game scene and a recent announcement on Shoryuken.com, I may at the very least, get to watch Daigo in person.

According to an announcement on Shoryuken.com, Daigo is not only coming to Canada for the Canada Cup, he’ll be partaking in exhibition matches in a number of Canadian major cities.

From Shoryuken.com:

Is it even possible and all the way from Japan? The beast will be unleashed in Canada and will be coming to The Canada Cup. For the first time ever Daigo Umehara will set foot in Canada to test our top players from every city. Thats right! Daigo and Justin Wong will be doing exhibition matches vs top players in every major city across Canada.

I’m by no means a top player, but I do live near a major Canadian city. At the very least, if he came to town, I’d do what I could to watch him in action. Or get my fightstick autographed. Or if I’m lucky, throw down with “The Beast”. I don’t want to sell Justin Wong short, either. It would be awesome to see him play live as well, cause he’s one of my favourite professional Street Fighter players.

To see the fighting game scene grow like this is fantastic. In a way, the scene may be better now than it was during the heyday of Street Fighter II. Thanks to the Internet, the fighting game community is growing and more tight-knit than ever. Events like the Canada Cup and the Daigo and Justin exhibition matches should only make the scene stronger out here.
