The Walking Dead series has been my biggest surprise of 2012. Going into it with no real interest in the franchise, or adventure games, its first two instalments have taken me on an emotional roller coaster unlike any other game has before. Based on what I’d seen of the trailer for The Long Road Ahead, I had concerns that the base premise wouldn’t be as interesting as the one in episode 2. However, all my fears were quickly quashed as revelation after revelation took place.
Having spent months holed up in an abandoned motel, Lee and his ragtag group of survivors run into a situation where they’ve got to keep moving. This episode focuses on that journey to supposed freedom from the zombies.
As you make that trip, you will be put into some extremely tense situations; all of which are amplified by the fact that you’ve become invested in these characters after all this time. Without going too deep into spoiler territory, the end results are almost always terrible. By the half way point, the twists, and turns had emotionally worn me out. There was a bit of a lull towards the latter half of the episode, but the payoff at the end was well worth it.
Kudos to Telltale for continuing to keep the quality high on these episodes. If they can close this series off as strongly as they’ve started it, this may very well be a game of the year candidate.
You’ve really sold me on this game. I might just have to pick it up here soon.
