It may still be too early to lock any of this in, but it seems clear that something is going on at Nintendo in regards to its upcoming Nintendo NX platform. First, we heard that they had given out dev units to developers during the second half of last year. Then a report from Taiwan-based outlet Digitimes claimed that Nintendo was aiming to ship 20 million NX units by the end of the year. Most recently, Nomura Securities Analyst Junko Yamamura reports that the console will be revealed in June and out in the fall of 2016.
If we take all of this as is, it looks like Nintendo’s new console is coming this year. If so, what does that mean?
The last hurrah for the Wii U…and the 3DS?
Launched in 2012, the pre-mature demise of the Wii U seemed inevitable. Despite my love for its library, the console has been an absolute disaster at retail. With the Wii having sold around 150 million units, it’s unacceptable for its follow-up to have only sold a tenth of that. With hardcore gamers flocking for the competition and with the casual crowd choosing to game on their smartphones, the only people left buying a Wii U were the Nintendo faithful. Sadly, it’s in Nintendo’s best interest to usher the Wii U out the door as soon as possible.
While it’s a no-brainer that Wii U support would be shuttered upon release of the NX, rumblings about what this new platform is make it sound like the Nintendo 3DS could meet its demise soon as well. Most of the rumors and speculation indicate that this platform is some sort of home consile and handheld hybrid. I’m guessing that the closest parallel we have is that the NX is a Wii U wherr the Gamepad can be played on its own away from the console.
If so, then the days of the 3DS may be numbered as well. Though it did trounce the Vita in terms of sales, its slow start and focus on glasses-free 3D may have stunted its growth. To-date, it’s nowhere near the success of the DS.
While there’s a lot still up in the air, especially when it comes to the nature of the new console, my spider sense is telling me that this thing is hitting stores in 2016. I’ve already made adjustments to my savings so that I’ll be ready to throw down the cash when the time comes. I guess at the very least, if it’s not out this year, I’ll have extra money in my savings for something else. Are you ready for a potential 2016 release of the Nintendo NX?
