Ranking The Mario Kart Series Worst to Best

With Mario Kart 8 Deluxe out now on the Nintendo Switch, players are zipping through the Mushroom Kingdom yet again for a chance at asserting themselves as the best behind a kart or motorcycle. Now that the series is decades old with over 10 titles in its lineup, let’s rank them worst to best!

Note: Mario Kart GP and GP 2 are not here. I have played both, but not nearly enough to rank them fairly.

Turning Formula D Into a Mario Kart Board Game

Formula DAfter a hilarious 4-player Formula D session filled with collisions, reckless driving and driving movie jokes, a light bulb went off in my head. I said out loud, “Couldn’t we make a Mario Kart version of Formula D?” The answer from the group was, “Yes.” Though we packed up the game after that and moved on with our lives, I’ve been thinking through the logistics of creating a Mario Kart variant ever since.

Game Design Talk: Making Fun Games For the Shallow and Deep Ends of the Pool


A few days ago, I was listening to the most recent episode of the Weekend Confirmed podcast that featured David Jaffe, the original designer behind God of War and Twisted Metal. One topic they talked about in particular caught my ear, and it was a discussion about making games fun for different skill levels. The analogy they used was a pool, where the shallow end of the pool was the place for entry-level players and the deep end for the hardcore crowd.

Making a game that is rewarding to all skill levels is hard.
