During my 14-year hiatus from fighting games, I missed out on some of the genre’s biggest franchises. Since I’ve come back to the scene, I’ve caught up on Street Fighter Alpha I and II, as well as Marvel vs. Capcom 2. However, the biggest fighting game I’ve yet to play is Third Strike.
That is, until now. Street Fighter III: Third Strike is available now on PSN, and will be available on XBOX Live tomorrow. I’ll for sure pick it and see what I’ve missed all these years.
I’m not completely ignorant to the game, as I’ve done a lot of research into Third Strike since my interest in the genre grew. I’m excited to finally play what some consider the best fighting game of all-time, but I’m also a bit concerned about how my skills to date will prepare me for what many also consider the most hardcore fighting game of all-time. Fighting games were built differently back then, and my new-school skills have yet to really pay off in the old games. The most obvious example for me is the Marvel series. I was able to pick up Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and get good at it fairly quickly, but years after the fact, I’m terrible at Marvel vs. Capcom 2. I would not be surprised if my Street Fighter IV skills don’t help me step into the nuances of Third Strike. In any case, I’m excited to get my hands on it and see what the gaming elitists keep yapping about.
For seasoned veterans, I’m sure you’re excited that this version will be arcade perfect (which wasn’t the case with the XBOX/PS2/Dreamcast ports), feature HD visuals, as well as the addition of GGPO online play and YouTube upload support. In particular, having GGPO and YouTube support is a huge win for the genre, as GGPO online play works great and having the ability to upload matches in-game to YouTube is so handy.
Is anyone else picking this one up this week?
