Pick-Up Post: Boxing Day 2012

As a Canadian, Boxing Day is one of the most wonderful times of the year for video game shopping. This year was highly eventful, as a bunch of games I’ve been itching to get my hands on went on sale. Below is my list of gaming related purchases. What did you get this Boxing Day?

X-COM: Enemy Unknown
(Buy Now from Amazon.com)

I’m a huge sucker for turn-based strategy titles. The Fire Emblem and Advance Wars series’ are some of my favourites. Though I’d never played the original X-COM, the demo for it sold me immediately. Ever since it’s October release, I’ve been chomping at the bit to get my hands on it, which I finally did when it went on sale at EB Games.

Sleeping Dogs
(Buy Now from Amazon.com)

What looked like a game that was headed for disaster when it was a True Crime game got reinvigorated by Square Enix when they picked up the game that Activision left for dead. Based on the positive word-of-mouth and its fun demo, it was near the top of my most wanted games for this holiday season.

Skylanders Giants Starter Pack
(Buy Now from Amazon.com)

Though I ended up buying the Xbox 360 version, I really wanted to pick this up on Wii U. I think it would have been a great way to get more out of that system while making it more accessible to Steff, who refuses to play anything on the Xbox 360. Alas, the Wii U version wasn’t on sale, so I decided to get the Xbox 360 version instead. Since I have the first game for the 360, it still makes sense. Looking forward to getting back into this franchise!

Saints Row The Third
(Buy Now on Amazon.com)

After all of the critical acclaim, I figure that I should get around to this one eventually to better grasp the gaming zeitgeist. I hear I’m in for a treat with one of the most outlandish open world games out there.

Shadows of the Damned
(Buy Now on Amazon.com)

Games by Suda 51 are hit-and-miss. They’re usually wildly creative and slick in presentation, but lacking in the gameplay department. I’ve heard that this one is one of his stronger games, and it doesn’t hurt that I was able to score this for less than $10. Crazy! No idea how much it is through the Amazon link above, but I’ll get back to you eventually on whether it was money well spent!

holiday 2012

Between this and Christmas gifts, I got spoiled. I have a ton of stuff to play through for the next few months and I can’t wait to dig into everything. Thanks to everyone for everything!
