E3 and our Wedding Anniversary

E3 is the Super Bowl of video game news. Since that first event in 1995, I’ve been glued to my computer, hitting refresh like crazy and absorbing all of the news that came in. As a gaming enthusiast, it’s a thrill to get first dibs on this news and chat about it with others to the point where I would put everything aside so I could focus on this.

Then, in 2016, something more important happened.

During the start of E3 that year, I got married to the love of my life. What would have been a week of me vegging on the computer was replaced by our wedding, and a trip to Hawaii. Save for waking up at like 4am to watch the Nintendo Direct, I was completely disconnected to E3 for the first time. No, I’m not expecting any sympathy from anyone here. It was a wonderful week and I wouldn’t have traded it for anything.

However, by virtue of E3 happening around the same time we celebrate our anniversary, I’m probably never going to experience it the same way again. Last year, my wife and I escaped for the weekend to a resort. During the drive, she actually read a live blog aloud so that I could stay as up-to-date as possible. If that ain’t love, then I don’t know what is.

This year, we’re once again escaping the city for an out-of-town getaway. Not quite sure how the timing is going to work out, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be missing a sizable chunk of the press conferences.

I’m largely replacing one celebration for another, more important one. Games are great, but the relationship with my wife trumps just about everything. The least I can do on our anniversary weekend is to at least tone down on the consumption of video game news for a bit.
