Last year, I dipped my toe into the competitive gaming waters by participating in Fan Expo 2010’s Super Street Fighter IV tournament. While I was bummed out that Fan Expo didn’t run any fighting game tournaments this year, I am attending something that will most likely be way cooler.
Toronto Top Tiers is presenting the 12th Annual Toronto Fighting Game Championships. Unlike the Fan Expo tournament, this tournament is bound to be a bigger deal for the fighting game community at large. This tournament is going to run a number of different games, including Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Tekken 6, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat and more. Beyond the expanded list of games, this tournament will be streamed by Team Spooky of EVO 2011 fame for you to enjoy from the comfort of your computer. On top of all that, some of the big-name fighting game players from the United States that are confirmed to attend include Combofiend, Arturo Sanchez, Chris G and more. If you’re interested in pre-registering for the event, everything you need can be found here.
I have pre-registered to participate in Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition and Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I will not be partaking in Mortal Kombat, even though I really like that game. I just don’t think I can cut it in MK. I am hoping to at least not make a fool out of myself in the other two games. If all goes well, some of my coworkers will be participating in the tournament with me, which would be awesome. If my girlfriend would like to come cheer me on, she is more than welcome to, though I’m not sure that she wants to be with me all weekend in a hotel with a bunch of other nerdy dudes, watching me play video games all weekend.
I’m super-stoked to go. Here’s to hoping that it turns out to be an awesome experience and that I don’t make a complete fool of myself.
