Quidditch: The Board Game Review

As a set-piece for action sequences in the Harry Potter stories, Quidditch as a fictional sport serves its purpose admirably. Taken out of that universe, its one of the most ill-conceived sports of all-time due to the mash-up of two completely unrelated activities and a scoring imbalance so insane that it renders 95% of the action useless in regards to determining the final outcome. Many years after the fact, I still scoff at how the characters in that world would accept Quidditch as is without any sort of scrutiny.

Released in 2000, Quidditch: The Board Game lets you experience this fundamentally-broken sport without the appeal of actually flying on a magical broomstick. If this were a perfect translation, it would still be a bad game based on its flaky foundation. However, this shoddy adaptation actually makes things considerably worse.

Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot Review

Killer Bunnies Quest for the Magic Carrot

Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot is a very apt name for this silly action game. Each player is on a mission to use their killer bunnies to find this magic carrot. The “killer” part refers to the fact that rival bunnies are trying to kill you so they can get the magic carrot for themselves, and it’s probably in your best interest to return the favour. There are aspects of this game that deserve merit, though other parts of it can be real deal-breakers for some.

Love Letter: Batman Edition Review

Without context, Love Letter: Batman Edition sounds like the worst game ever. Who would want to play a game where you write love letters to the Dark Knight? Luckily for us, this isn’t the premise. Instead of sending romantic notes to a princess, which was the goal of the game this is based on, this edition requires players to apprehend Gotham’s fiercest foes. Awkward name aside, should you and your friends aid Batman on this adventure?

Batman: Gotham City Strategy Game Review

Who runs Gotham? Of course, we all know it’s Batman, but that’s not going to stop his rogue gallery from trying. In Batman: Gotham City Strategy Game by Wizkids, you play as the villains as they try and build their crime empire while taking over the city. Of course, Batman won’t just give it to you, as he has a knack for showing up at the most inopportune times to clean up the streets. Is it worth your time to square off against rival bad guys and the Dark Knight himself?

Colt Express Review

A perfectly normal passenger train ride to New Mexico goes sideways when a group of bandits hijack it in pursuit of riches. In Colt Express by Christophe Raimbault and Asmodee, two to six players will act as the bandits, robbing riders, fighting bandits and evading the marshal. The immediate allure of the game is that the whole thing eschews a traditional board for a model train. This approach scores high marks for presentation, but is this game as fun as it looks?

Stone Age Review

It’s up to you and your fellow players to push our ancestors up the evolutionary track. Are you ready to venture back to the dawn of civilization?

Tsuro of the Seas Review

The ocean is dangerous enough as is. In Tsuro of the Seas, they’re even deadlier thanks to a gang of sea monsters that happen to be traveling through the area. Not sure why you and up to seven other seafarers would choose to set sail here, but it’s too late for that now. Do you have what it takes to make it home alive?

Code Name S.T.E.A.M. Review

Aliens have invaded London! Who can we call to save the day?! The Agents of S.T.E.A.M. of course! Led by the Abraham Lincoln, it’s up to you to guide him and his ragtag group of steampunk soldiers through battle. Created by Intelligent Systems, Code Name S.T.E.A.M. is a turn-based strategy game with third-person shooting, a la Gears of War. Is this shake-up enough for it to move outside of the shadow cast by Intelligent Systems’ previous efforts, such as Advance Wars and Fire Emblem?
