Street Fighter V Final Beta Zangief Matches and Impressions

Even without his Siberian Blizzard Ultra combo from Street Fighter IV, Zangief will continue to protect the Russian Skies. This time, he has a mid-air Spinning Piledriver that can catch anyone while they’re in the act of jumping. This fundamentally changes the meta game of fighting Zangief, as you can’t simply hold up to get out of the way of a ground-based grab. His air grab is insanely powerful and can grab people out of almost everything, so it’s a real threat.

While he loses his Green Hand, he gains other tools in the transition that make him a more than worthy adversary in Street Fighter V, such as a V-Skill that allows him to walk forward while absorbing two attacks, to an armored standing medium punch, to a ground-based Spinning Piledriver that has incredible range. You should be scared every time you see this Russian wrestler on the other end of the battlefield.

Ultra Street Fighter IV battle: Zangief (bubbah238) vs Decapre (jettFTW)

My Decapre can do some damage now. However, I was still getting my feet wet with the character when I ran into the #1 ranked Zangief in the world on PSN. No surprise as to how this one ends.

Analyzing My Worst Match-Ups As a Rose Player in Street Fighter IV

One of the least talked about features in the Street Fighter IV series of games is the way in which it tracks your progress. Not only does it track your wins and losses, but it also tracks your winning percentage on a per-character basis. This way, players can see how successful their main character is against the rest of the cast.

Over the years, the game has a lot of data around how I play the game. In between Xbox and PlayStation versions of the game, I’ve invested over 2,000 hours of my life into this. In particular, there’s a wealth of Rose data in there that could prove handy. For the purposes of this post, I only took a screen grab of my 10 worst match-ups on PSN, though I don’t think my Xbox numbers would veer too much from this. It’s also a sample size of close to 4,000 matches, so I think this on its own will be good to work with. Let’s check out the skeletons in my closet.

m3gatron427 (Zangief) vs. jettFTW (Rose) in Ultra Street Fighter IV

A 5000+ BP Zangief player immediately decides to take a holier-than-thou approach to Rose’s fireballs by simply blocking them until he loses. He quickly follows up his loss with the hateful message below.

photo(47)I’ll gladly take the free win and the Battle Points, but I won’t accept anyone trying to paint me as the bad guy because I didn’t follow some non-existent set of fighting game gentleman’s rules. It’s people like this who also foolishly believe that throws are cheap and should not be used in any fighting game ever. These gentleman’s rules DO NOT EXIST. You play to win and that’s that. We live in a world where TAC infinite combos in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 are deemed legal by the biggest fighting game tournament in the world. A world where a glitch became heavily used in Capcom vs. SNK 2 because it made the game better.

Furthermore, we live in a world where Zangief can beat Rose! Watch the above video where Aquasilk overcomes any on-paper match-up advantages I had to beat me into submission. M3gatron427’s refusal to fight only further amplifies his ignorance and lack of match-up knowledge.

This is fighting games in 2014. Everything is fair game and anything that isn’t gets patched out. If you want to get under my skin in Ultra Street Fighter IV, don’t throw a match and then send a salty text message as a parting shot. Those childish antics nothing. If you really want to grind my gears, beat me in the game.
