NMBR 9 Review

From my life-long fascination with Tetris, to my love of the quilting-themed tile-placement game Patchwork, I seem to have a thing for arranging blocks into neat formations. NMBR 9 is yet another game that challenges players to arrange and stack blocks in order to gain the most points. Using interesting shapes and a unique scoring mechanic, does its take on a well-worn concept add something new to this gameplay mechanic?

Growing Frustrations with the T.I.M.E Stories Franchise

The base game of T.I.M.E Stories is one of my all-time favourite board games. It took us on an incredible adventure that was wildly creative and unlike anything we’d ever played. We were so excited that the game already had more story expansions to play through.

Over time, our excitement in the franchise cooled. I spoke to this phenomenon in a video where I talked about the expansions. Ever since that original game, each expansion that followed has generally trended downward in terms of quality. The latest one we played, Estrella Drive, is the worst one yet.

The Rise of Tabletop Gaming

Back in my day, tabletop gaming wasn’t ‘cool’. They were played by kids, families, and nerds that I thought were far more nerdy than I. At the very least, that’s how I saw it. Even as late as my first experience at Fan Expo in 2010, I went into the tabletop gaming section and passed judgment with extreme prejudice.

What a difference a year makes. After being tricked by my girlfriend to partake in her friend’s Dominion night, I’ve actively partaken in many tabletop gaming nights and am slowly expanding my horizons in the genre. Apparently, I’m late to the party, because I get the sense that this scene has been in the midst of a resurgence for quite some time.
