Growing Frustrations with the T.I.M.E Stories Franchise

The base game of T.I.M.E Stories is one of my all-time favourite board games. It took us on an incredible adventure that was wildly creative and unlike anything we’d ever played. We were so excited that the game already had more story expansions to play through.

Over time, our excitement in the franchise cooled. I spoke to this phenomenon in a video where I talked about the expansions. Ever since that original game, each expansion that followed has generally trended downward in terms of quality. The latest one we played, Estrella Drive, is the worst one yet.

Board Game Night Playlist: Board Games Inspired By Video Games

Video games owe a lot of its success to board games. Dungeons & Dragons alone has had elements of its gameplay cribbed by countless video games, such as the concepts of quests, health points, item usage, combat and more. If you dig far enough into the history of video games, you can probably find a theme or gameplay concept rooted in a board game. Video games have also innovated within its own space. From Super Mario to Call of Duty, there are a ton of unique experiences that have their roots in this digital medium.

Nowadays, you’ll see those video game specific concepts appear in board games. Whether they’re board games based on video game properties or digital gameplay mechanics that have gone analog, they feed off one one-another to push each other forward.

In this edition of the Board Game Night Playlist, we embark on an adventure that marries the best of both worlds. This list should be particularly interesting for video game fans looking for a smooth transition into the analog side of things. Time to press start on this playlist!

T.I.M.E Stories Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

Days removed from playing and completing T.I.M.E Stories, my mind is still buzzing from what transpired. Essentially, it’s an adventure video game that’s been expertly translated to the tabletop. As a member of what is basically the time police, you travel to a 1920s asylum to foil someone’s plot of breaking the space time continuum.

Deeply engaging and exciting from end-to-end, my experience with this game is quite possibly the best I’ve ever had with a board game. With The Marcy Case expansion already out and more on the way, T.I.M.E Stories is bound to stay top of mind for quite a while. I can’t recommend this one enough.

T.I.M.E Stories Review

T.I.M.E Stories puts you and your friends in charge of protecting the space time continuum. Easy as pie, right? You’ll do this by traveling to different periods in time where a disturbance is sensed and putting a stop to whomever is trying to muck with history.

The base game features one episode that takes place in a 1920s insane asylum. Other episodes can be purchased separately as expansions. While the replay of the base game will be an immediate flag for some – as there’s only about six hours of gameplay to be had before you’ve exhausted its replay value – does it do something within that time to make you buy into its vision?
