T.I.M.E Stories Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

Days removed from playing and completing T.I.M.E Stories, my mind is still buzzing from what transpired. Essentially, it’s an adventure video game that’s been expertly translated to the tabletop. As a member of what is basically the time police, you travel to a 1920s asylum to foil someone’s plot of breaking the space time continuum.

Deeply engaging and exciting from end-to-end, my experience with this game is quite possibly the best I’ve ever had with a board game. With The Marcy Case expansion already out and more on the way, T.I.M.E Stories is bound to stay top of mind for quite a while. I can’t recommend this one enough.

Pandemic Legacy Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

For the past month or so, my board gaming group have been playing Pandemic Legacy. Unlike classic Pandemic, where the world resets after each game, Pandemic Legacy takes players on a disease-fighting adventure that spans a year of time in the game world. Every decision in the game is permanent, as stickers are used make adjustments to character cards and boards, cards are required to be ripped up, and characters can even die if they get unlucky.

We’re not done yet, but the experience so far has been stellar. I didn’t play enough of the 2015 crop of board games to name a definitive game of the year, though this one squeaks by Codenames as my personal pick. Steer clear if you haven’t played classic Pandemic yet. However, if you have, what are you waiting for?!

Codenames Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

CodenamesCodenames is part Guess Who?, part Battleship, and way more awesome than those two games could ever hope to be. Working in teams, players will take turns deciphering their spymaster’s clues in order to correctly identify their fellow spies in the field. Guess wrong and you might identify an enemy spy, or worse yet, an assassin that will immediately end the game, causing your whole team to lose.

Playing as an operative, it’s a blast to try and guess the names based on clues that might be amazing or horrible from your spymaster. Being the spymaster takes the experience to another level, as it really takes some thought to craft one-word clues that apply to multiple names. Besides being a fantastic game in both roles, the game scales well to almost any player count beyond four, so it’s something that everyone at the party can (and will) enjoy. This one is fresh in my brain right now from having played a ton of it recently, but I really believe that this one is fantastic and one that will have staying power. Whatever you need to do to play Codenames, do it!

Dead of Winter Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

Dead of Winter is an insanely popular game in my neck of the woods. Retailers here make big announcements every time it’s in stock, only for the game to sell out minutes later. I was lucky enough to snag one online at 2am a little while ago and have been loving the game since.

This is basically the best Walking Dead board game out there. It captures so much of the action, drama and intrigue that make the show great in a game that is always fun and exciting to play. In particular, players who love games with stories or themes are really going to get a kick out of this one. Games aren’t guaranteed to stay on my awesome list forever, though I don’t this one leaving any time soon. Congratulations Dead of Winter!

Added Power Grid to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

In Power Grid, players take on the roles of rival power supply companies, aiming to supply the most regions with energy. You will manage many aspects of the expansion process, from bidding on power plants, buying fuel in a marketplace where prices vary based on supply and demand, and the building of power plants in different cities. Admittedly, I didn’t have much interest in the game going into it, but it managed to wow me in a big way. Tying all of the aspects of together is a tightly-woven economic system that is exciting and thought-provoking. If you like Ticket to Ride and are looking for a similar type of game with a little more complexity, Power Grid is the logical next step. Knowing what I know now of the game, it would be criminal of me to leave it off the list!

Sushi Go Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

The inclusion of Sushi Go onto this list even caught me by surprise. Though the review only recently went live, I’ve had this game for a few months now and have played it a lot. In most cases, the game worked well, though it wasn’t anything that blew me out of the water.

That is, until I broke out it out with my coworkers. Maybe it was just the crowd that I played it with, but the game shined that night in a way that I didn’t think it could. On that night, the sushi moved around the table for hours as my coworkers wouldn’t stop playing it. Whether it hits that super nova level of awesome again remains to be seen. However, even at it’s “worst”, the game is still going to be fun any time you break it out. Congratulations Sushi Go for making the list!

Added XCOM: The Board Game to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

As a huge fan of XCOM and of board games, picking this one up was a no-brainer. But would it be good? After playing it a bunch over the past week or so, I’m happy to say, “Yes!” XCOM: The Board Game does a great job of providing players with an all-around essence of the video game in a format that’s better suited for the tabletop.

Some traditionalists may have grave concerns over the game requiring a digital app to play it, though the app really adds to the experience. You get a great tutorial, variable set-ups and a dynamic turn structure that would be a nightmare to recreate with physical components. The app really takes the game to the next level and wouldn’t be nearly as cohesive without it. Glad to add this one to the list!

Camel Up Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

Despite being the winner of the 2014 Speil des Jahres – the most prestigious award in board games – the thought of betting on racing camels didn’t sound all that riveting to me. On a lark, I tried it out with some friends at Snakes and Lattes and it really caught us off guard with how fun it is. Camel Up mixes together a unique take on the roll-and-move mechanic along with different ways of betting on the race that make every race exciting and silly. It does scale well, as the game claims to support from 2-8 players, though I think it works best with 3-5. I’m not qualified enough to say whether Camel Up deserves to be a game of the year champion, but it’s certainly earned a spot on my list of Awesome Board Games You Should Play.

Splendor and Pandemic: The Cure Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

Splendor Game

Pandemic: The CureSplendor and Pandemic: The Cure are both awesome games that came out in 2014. The former is an awesome game mechanically with an odd theme bolted onto it, while the other is a great re-imagining of a modern classic. Should you choose to play either, I’m fairly certain that you’ll have a blast. Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

You and an opponent assume the role of rival masterminds in Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men. Based on the Avengers vs. X-Men comic book crossover event, you’ll recruit heroes into your squad before sending them off to battle. Each hero is represented by a card that outlines their special ability, as well as one or more custom dice styled to look like that character. Once you get accustomed to the rules and the different states your dice can be in at any given time, this one is a fun fast-paced dice battling game that you’ll want to play again and again. If the base set isn’t enough, booster packs are sold for only $1 that come with two cards and two dice. This one is another game that’s easy to recommend because it’s fun, cheap (the base game is only $15…if you can find it at retail price) and the collectible factor is through the roof.
