Girlfriend Gaming: Help Me Recommend PS3 Games

My girlfriend is a life-long PlayStation fan. Way before I entered her life, she grew up playing Crash Team Racing on her PlayStation One. She’s since picked up a SNES and a Wii, but she’s had her eye on a PlayStation 3 for a long time now. At the very least, she’s wanted one long before I ever started thinking about it.

She feels like now is the right time to take the plunge and pick up a PS3. She’s asked for my help in recommending games for her to try, but my PS3 knowledge isn’t that great compared to what I know about the other systems. This is why I’m enlisting you for help. What should she buy or try out on the PS3?

For reference, you can check out my previous Girlfriend Gaming posts to get an idea of what she likes. Also, I’ll list off a few games here she likes or is interested in trying out.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

My girlfriend is a huge Batman fan. She loves the character, owns all the movies, owns various Batman merchandise, has sat in the 1960’s Batmobile and even has a personalized autograph from Adam West.

Her Batman love was part of the reason why plans on picking this one up. The other reason is the fact that this game is awesome. She played it one time at my house and did not put it down until many hours later. It’s been a long time since then, so I know she’s excited to go back to Gotham and finish what she started.

God of War Collection

My girlfriend is the reason I own God of War Collection. I didn’t have anything more than a passing interest in it, but she was completely on-board with it from the moment she first saw the game. She’s played some of the first God of War and was totally absorbed into that universe. I never thought she’d be the type to yell, “Eat it!” as she jammed a sword down a monster’s throat, but she very much did just that. I’ve offered to lend my copy to her, but she likes it enough to want a copy for herself.

Plants vs. Zombies

If it weren’t for my girlfriend, I don’t think I would have given Plants vs. Zombies a chance. She fell in love with this game after trying it out at the Apple store and powered through it once she got it on her iPhone. I know that this is now out for XBOX Live, though a PlayStation Network version has yet to be confirmed for release. If this never comes out for PS3, is there anything like Plants vs. Zombies available on the platform?

Super Street Fighter IV?

A few days ago, my girlfriend asked me to recommend some games for her to get when she buys her PS3. I pulled up a Gamepro list, read it to her, and got her feedback for each game.

“Sports Champions?”

“No.”

“Resident Evil 5?”

“No.”

“Super Street Fighter IV?”

I was expecting a definitive no for Street Fighter, but her response caught me off guard. I don’t remember exactly what she said, but I do remember her saying something about having some interest in it, but she’s intimidated by my level of play and how hardcore I position the game to be. We have played Street Fighter II together in the past, and with a bit of coaching, she could throw fireballs and dragon punches fairly consistently.

For everything I say about Daigo and all of the practice I put into the game to play like the pros, the majority of people who play Street Fighter don’t play the game like that at all. For most, it’s a fun game where you press buttons to beat people up. Of late, I’ve seen a number of my coworkers have a lot of fun playing it without any sort of fighting game experience. I think it would be a shame if she had interest in any game but never gave it a shot because I scared her away. I’ve offered to lend her my PS3 copy of the game to play at her leisure so that she can come to her own conclusions without me ruining the experience.

I hope that helps, Internet. And I hope you can help in return. Based on what you know of my significant other, what games do you think she’d like on the PS3? They can be disc-based or downloadable, or even PS1 disc games. I look forward to hearing from you!
