In just a few days, Canada’s next big fighting game tournament touches down in Toronto. Toryuken is being run by the team at Toronto Top Tiers and I’m fairly certain it’s going to be hype. They were the same team behind T12 and overall, it was a great tournament and a great experience. I encourage everyone in the area to come down to body fools, support the FGC and get hype. If you can’t come down, make sure to tune into the live stream at www.twitch.tv/torontotoptiers.
Going into it as a competitor this year, I definitely feel like I have something to prove after my performance at last year’s T12. In Street Fighter teams, my team got 13th. In Marvel, I placed top 32 in a bracket that had over 100 competitors. In Street Fighter singles, I got into winners bracket and faced off against Chi Rithy; arguably Canada’s best Street Fighter player. However, there was definitely room for improvement, and I’m still salty about getting absolutely destroyed on stream by Chi Rithy and Marlinpie. For all the great things I accomplished at T12, the vast majority of people only saw me at my worst.
Did I put in the work required to prove that I’m not a scrub? Yes and no. In Street Fighter IV, there was a 4-month stretch where I worked really hard to get better at that game. The end result? I’ve been the #1 ranked Rose player in Canada on XBOX Live for months and at one point was the #1 Cammy in Canada, too. Does that make me a shoo-in for top 8? Not at all. The competition will be stiff and ever since the release of Street Fighter X Tekken and I haven’t put in much work to stay sharp. It would be a shame to have put in all that hard work and not have people see the results, so I’ve been doing what I can to get back in game shape.

Despite Marvel vs. Capcom 3 being the game I best performed at last year, I haven’t played much of it since. Since T12, I shifted my focus to Street Fighter, grew complacent with my current Marvel skill-set and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 didn’t do enough to recapture my interest when it first came out. Of late, I’ve found the spark to get me playing it again, but I don’t have the motivation to actually improve. Breaking top 32 is going to be tough, but I think I still have enough juice in me to body some fools.
The game that’s been getting most of my attention is Street Fighter X Tekken. It’s the hot new game that I think is pretty fun. While everyone is going to be new to the game, I fear that the odds of me taking an early exit are high. I’m still only good with one character and I don’t think I’ve really formed a solid team yet.
Lastly, I’m probably going to partake in Skullgirls just for the fun of it. Though my skills in that game are extremely limited, I think that the game is a lot of fun and would make for a great game to play at a tournament. Don’t expect much from me on this one.
T12 takes place on Saturday, May 19th and Sunday, May 20th. For more details, check out www.torontotoptiers.com.
