On Saturday, November 2nd, many will be participating in the Extra Life 25-hour gaming marathon in support of the Children’s Miracle Network of Hospitals. Our group had an amazing time participating in the program and can’t wait to do it again on November 2nd at 9am EST. If you’ve ever considered participating, or are in the midst of preparing for your big Extra Life event, maybe these tips will come in handy!
1. You don’t have to do a 25-hour marathon on Game Day
Want to participate in Extra Life, but don’t feel comfortable in doing a 25-hour marathon? Maybe Game Day falls on a day that isn’t convenient for you. Don’t worry about it! Extra Life campaigns run from January 1st to December 31st, allowing you to any number of events throughout the year on your own schedule. Go with what works for you!
2. Streaming is not a requirement
For a long time, I thought you could only participate in Extra Life if you could stream it. Not true! If you have the means of doing so, go nuts! However, you’re more than welcome to host your own event without making it a broadcast.
3. Reach out to your family and friends for support
Particularly for streamers, it’s easy to focus on drumming up donations from viewers. However, don’t forget about your mom, aunt Suzie, and your old friends from high school. Your friends and family are willing to help your cause! Just keep in mind that depending on their fluency in gaming, you may need to adjust your messaging a bit. When I’m reaching out to friends and family that aren’t as interested in games as I am, I focus on raising money for our local children’s hospital, which is a much easier message for them to get behind.
4. Leverage Extra Life’s Resources page for tips, graphics, and streaming overlays
Whether you’re looking for hi-res logos, talking points to help you explain how Extra Life works, or streaming overlays and tickers to implement on your broadcast, you can find a lot of that stuff on the Extra Life website under Resources. Having access to all of this stuff goes a long way towards making your campaign look and sound as official as it can be!
5. Spread the word
Make sure you reach as far as you can in order to get the word out about your efforts. If you’ve got social media and a friends list, that’s a great start! You can also reach out through Discord, as Extra Life has a presence there. Your local community might have its own Discord group as well, so make sure to look for that one too!
6. If you’re playing with friends, make sure to provide the proper accommodations!
I highly recommend sharing the Extra Life experience with friends and family. We had an amazing time gaming with each other and I even found a way for my long distance friends to be a part of the show! However, while it’s easy to get caught up on what games you’re playing when, make sure to take care of them! Have a plan for food, drinks, and sleep. Heck, even work it into the show! Who doesn’t want to watch a Mukbang!?
7. Get a good night’s rest the day before
Last year, I’d been planning this marathon for months and thought I had everything under control. All of a sudden, it’s 2am on the night of our marathon and I still wasn’t done setting up. This time, I’ll be taking time off of work before AND after the stream to give myself ample time to rest and recover. Not everyone is going to have that option, but do what you can to secure some down time just before the marathon.
8. Don’t forget that you’re playing for the kids
It’s really easy to get caught up in the laughs and excitement that are created in the moment. But whenever you get the chance, make sure to reiterate what all of this is for. We’re raising money for kids who need all of the support we can provide. If you have any personal examples of what this cause means to you, share them with all involved! This will only make your event even more impactful.
Fingers crossed that these pointers help you get the most out of your Extra Life experience. Whether you’re hosting your own event, donating to someone else’s, or curious about getting more involved, your interest in the cause is appreciated! If you have any more tips to share, feel free to drop them in the comments!
