The subject of game of the year has just about run its course now that most of the major gaming publications, blogs of all sizes and message boards have had their say (including this one). Who did you agree with? Who do you think got it all wrong? Let’s discuss in the comments!
2011 was a landmark year from In Third Person. After the WordPress home page plug in September 2010, this blog could have easily slipped back into obscurity, only to be viewed by 5-10 people a day. Instead you readers kept visiting, commenting and sharing In Third Person content to make it a far bigger deal than I could have ever imagined. Thank you for making this site as successful as it is! Let’s make 2012 even better 🙂
Also worth thanking is WordPress. Besides being a great platform to blog on and the promo in 2010, they sent me a very cool In Third Person annual report.

Choosing a game of the year is never easy. Each year, we’re blessed with tons of great games, and to choose just one above the rest is very tough. Case in point: I copped out last year and picked two games as my “games of the year” for different reasons, but never definitively picked one over the other. I’m sure that the process for selecting a game of the year can be even harder for major gaming publications, who have to weight out multiple opinions before coming to a ‘definitive’ conclusion.
Having played many of this year’s biggest releases, I did a lot of soul-searching in order to choose a game I feel is worth of the game of the year distinction. When it was all said and done, I came to a conclusion. Was it Batman: Arkham City? Uncharted 3? Portal 2? Could it be another big release I haven’t listed here? Or maybe I went completely out of left field with my choice?

Most Disappointing Game is a crappy honour to receive. It doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the worst game, but it’s a game that people had certain expectations for going into it that ultimately weren’t reached.
In Third Person’s Most Disappoint Game Award goes to a sequel that was a sleeper hit. I had a ton of fun with it and couldn’t wait for the sequel. Be careful what you wish for…
As Microsoft, Sony, and to an extent, Apple, went on their merry way in 2011 with their gaming ventures, it seemed like Nintendo sputtered all the way through. As a lifelong Nintendo fanboy and a Nintendo-only console owner up until this generation, it’s tough seeing what Nintendo has done (and not done) in 2011. If you’re a Nintendo-only household and you’re as hardcore into gaming as I am, I feel your pain.
Let’s look at Nintendo’s fronts, discussed what went wrong and their outlook going into 2012.
