Shovel Knight Review

Not that long ago, I took a work trip to Chicago for a few days. Having beaten The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, I was looking for something new to play on the Nintendo Switch during my travels. I know that Shovel Knight isn’t new to many of you, but it’s one that has managed to slip by me since it was released in June 2014. Having played through the main campaign of the Treasure Trove Edition, it’s clear that I’ve been missing out on a brilliant game.

Yoshi’s Woolly World Review

Yoshi’s Island on the Super Nintendo is a gem of a game. Annoying Baby Mario crying aside, it’s innovative art style and approach to gameplay make it one of my all-time favourites. Since then, Yoshi’s platforming adventures have been mediocre-to-terrible affairs.

I long for the day when Nintendo makes a true successor to that under-the-radar classic, but for now, I have Yoshi’s Woolly World. While it does star Mario’s dinosaur sidekick, this is more of a spiritual successor to Kirby’s Epic Yarn thanks to its fabric-to-life art style and general approach to difficulty. This may not be the Yoshi game I asked for, but is it one worth playing anyway?

SteamWorld Dig Review

What lies in the depths of Tumbleton? Rusty is about to find out SteamWorld Dig. I played this game on the Nintendo 3DS, though it’s available on just about everything at this point. Having inherited a mine from his uncle, he decides to explore it for himself.

I’ve kind of been ducking this game for years, as it just didn’t sound like a game that I’d be interested in. After receiving it as a gift and with nothing to do on a train ride to Montreal, I decided to give it a go. Boy was I ever missing out on an awesome game.

Super Mario Maker Review

In the early 1980s, Nintendo designed the first Super Mario levels by hand with graph paper. Decades later, Nintendo released Super Mario Maker on the Wii U. With the use of the touchscreen on the Wii U Gamepad, players of all sorts can whip together a functional level within a matter of minutes. Is this the tool that puts Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto out of business?

Super Mario Maker Design Diary: Tight Squeeze

Going into Super Mario Maker, did you have a plan? A grandiose level design idea that you scribbled in a notebook as a child that been patiently waiting to burst off of the page and into the game? Can’t say I did. After completing the tutorial, I found myself at a loss. What the heck do I do now?

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Review

Having played bit roles in Nintendo games since the original Super Mario Bros., Toad finally gets an opportunity to shine in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Using the Toad mini games from Super Mario 3D World as a base, Nintendo expands on that experience with dozens of new levels on a disc that’s less than full price. Is Toad’s debut a real step towards stardom?
