Mario Golf on the Gameboy Color did something very cool that pretty much every other entry in the series has overlooked. More than just a golf game, it incorporated story and role-playing elements as a means of spicing things up. During my time with that game, I felt truly invested in the trials and tribulations of an aspiring golfer trying to become the Mushroom Kingdom champion due to having an impact on my character’s story arc and development of his abilities. Almost two decades later, Sidebar Games picks up the torch on the golf RPG concept with Golf Story and runs with it.

Saber Interactive and Nintendo left NBA Playgrounds players in the cold as their squabbles over patching policies caused a major update to be left hanging for months. With the NBA season having wrapped up weeks ago and with other Nintendo Switch games available to keep players occupied, I would imagine that any interest in this game died long ago. While it’s great that Saber Interactive finally did right by Nintendo Switch gamers, is this a case of too little, too late?

NBA Playgrounds FINALLY Gets Patched on the Nintendo Switch

NBA Playgrounds launched in a rough state. Featuring blurry visuals in handheld mode and a confusing shooting system while lacking online play, the game fell short of rekindling the NBA Jam fire. Not all hope was lost when developer Saber Interactive promised a patch that would magically fix everything. Unfortunately for Switch owners, the patch just arrived, months after the fact.

The wait has been terrible. I’m guessing by this point, everyone who bought the game has moved on. But maybe this patch will at least give those players incentive to try it again. The game now looks a bit better in handheld mode, sports online play, and now has a shot meter to make it clear when you need to release the button in order to make the basket. Furthermore, accuracy has been tuned in order to make layups easier and 3-pointers harder.

At some point, I’ll stream this game again to show off the new updates. I might write some sort of impressions piece as well as a means of closing out my review. Not sure if I can recommend prospective buyers from jumping in now, but at the very least, fans who felt burned by NBA Playgrounds the first time around may finally get the game we were hoping for.

A Look Back at NBA Street

With the relatively recent release of NBA Playgrounds, the name NBA Street has been thrown around a lot as a point of comparison. At first, I was hopeful that Saber Interactive would be reviving a style of arcade basketball that is long overdue for a return. Instead, I was disappointed to see that the comparisons were way off base. NBA Playgrounds is much closer in nature to NBA Jam than EA’s brilliant baller. Using NBA Jam as a template is fine, though it makes me long for NBA Street‘s triumphant return.

NBA Playgrounds Review (Nintendo Switch)

[NOTE: This reviews the current version of the game that does not have online play. It was not available at this point in time and based on recent comments from the developer, it’s not coming in a timely manner. As such, I’ve chosen to publish the review without online play.]

Coming out just as my beloved Toronto Raptors get bounced from the playoffs yet again, NBA Playgrounds arrives just in time to ease the pain of another failed attempt at the championship. Unlike the simulation-based NBA 2K series, NBA Playgrounds is a throwback to the arcade insanity of NBA Jam. Is this new take on a classic play stile a somersault slam dunk?

Coming Soon: NBA Playgrounds Review

For the last few days, I’ve been playing NBA Playgrounds on the Nintendo Switch. I’ve been working on a review, but I don’t feel comfortable publishing it until online play is activated on the Switch. When that goes live, I’ll give it a go and finish the review.

What I can say for the time being is that it’s fun, but highly flawed. The game’s shooting mechanics make shooting 3s too easy and 2s too difficult. The AI is unbalanced, as it will steal the ball from you every two seconds, but can’t stop a long range shot to save its life. Unless you’re a fan of the sport with an unshakeable urge to play a modern NBA Jam, you can probably pass on this one. Full review coming soon!

Neo Turf Masters on the Nintendo Switch Review

I am a sucker for golf games. Despite my general apathy towards the sport, I have been a fan of it in video game form since Golf on the NES. Since I’m also starving for different types of gaming experiences to try on the Switch, Neo Turf Masters fit perfectly in the middle of my personal Venn diagram. It has its quirks, but my experience with it was fairly positive.
