The Rise of Tabletop Gaming

Back in my day, tabletop gaming wasn’t ‘cool’. They were played by kids, families, and nerds that I thought were far more nerdy than I. At the very least, that’s how I saw it. Even as late as my first experience at Fan Expo in 2010, I went into the tabletop gaming section and passed judgment with extreme prejudice.

What a difference a year makes. After being tricked by my girlfriend to partake in her friend’s Dominion night, I’ve actively partaken in many tabletop gaming nights and am slowly expanding my horizons in the genre. Apparently, I’m late to the party, because I get the sense that this scene has been in the midst of a resurgence for quite some time.

ZombiU Impressions

Great. Another zombie game. We don’t already have enough of those yet, right? While I’m more than tired of the zombies  in video games and other forms of fiction, I’m willing to let my fatigue slide if a particular piece of media brings forth a new twist on the trope. From Plants vs. Zombies cutesy tower defence, to the human drama of The Walking Dead, there’s still room for growth.

ZombiU draws heavy inspiration from Dark Souls, while making great use of the Wii U GamePad’s defining features to create a survival horror experience unlike anything out there. Though it has its quirks, and the overall gameplay may turn off some, it’s very cool for what it is.

Underneath My Christmas Tree: 2012 Gaming Edition

Merry belated Christmas! Hope your holidays are going great!

As I’ve gotten older, the focal point of Christmas has shifted from receiving to giving. I’m sure that once I have children of my own, that focus will shift even more. Though I generally expect less as time goes by, I still got a number of wonderful gaming related gifts from my loved ones. Thank you Santa for everything!
