Concept Review

Take Charades. Now put it on a board. This is the gist of Concept. Players will take turns trying to communicate through figures, cubes and a board that features dozens of icons while the others try to guess what’s being conveyed. This may not sound all that interesting, though it’s more entertaining than its three-second pitch makes it sound.

Refining My Board Gaming Palette

Power Grid Deluxe, Splendor, Sushi Go, Marvel Legendary: Guardians of the Galaxy, Lords of Vegas: Up, 7 WondersWhen I first discovered the joys of board gaming, I felt like a kid entering a candy store for the first time. With so many games and no real concept of taste, I sampled many different flavours of board games. Some were fantastic, opening my eyes to a whole subsection of games that I enjoy today. Others were not so delicious, leaving me to shy away from titles of a similar nature. Through it all, my taste in gaming has been refined to a point where I have a good sense of who I am as a board gamer and what I like.

Sushi Dice Review

From Sushi Go!, to Sushi Draft, and now Sushi Dice, it’s hard to ignore the emerging trend of sushi-based tabletop games. At this point, I’m all for it, as long as the games are good. Sushi Dice is a frenetic dice game where sushi chefs work to prepare dishes faster than their rivals. Should your next board game night menu feature this one?

Pick-Up Post: Star Wars X-Wing Millenium Falcon and Slave 1 Expansions

Star Wars X-Wing Millenium Falcon Slave 1

One of the biggest draws to Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures is the fact that it allows players to partake in an epic dogfight with ships from the Star Wars universe. The big caveat is that most of those ships are sold separately and the cost for creating fleets adds up quickly. After picking up the core set, I only bought one additional X-Wing so that our group could play 4-player games. The game made such a good first impression that I decided to fill out my fleets a bit more with two of the coolest ships in the galaxy.

Luxury Editions of Board Games

Ticket to Ride 10th Anniversary EditionWith higher trim level and an increased price to match, luxury editions of games aren’t meant for most. More often than not, the standard edition of a game will suit you just fine. However, a trend I’ve noticed since the release of the fancy 10th anniversary edition of Ticket to Ride is the growing number of designer games getting the tricked out treatment. As a proud owner of that particular luxury edition, I’m all for the release of other games in this manner.

Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Core Set Review

Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Core Set puts you in the cockpits of some of the most iconic ships in the galaxy. Whether you’re piloting an X-Wing or a TIE Fighter, you’ll be whizzing around in space, blasting enemy ships while evading oncoming attacks. Looking a a full setup of the game with a number of separately sold expansion ships is a sight to behold, but you’re only getting three ships in the base set. Is a three ship battle still one worth fighting?

Flip City Review

At first glance, Flip City looks like a city building game along the lines of Machi Koro. Both share city building as a backdrop, along with similar art styles and colour palettes. What sets Flip City apart is that it’s not really a city building game at all. In reality, it’s a press your luck game with some deck-building thrown into the mix. However you want to classify it, is this small title worth your time?

The Corners in Formula D

Formula D is a board game that brilliantly captures the excitement of car racing. For a game where the only movement comes from rolling dice and moving your car a few spaces forward, it’s almost magical how the game can still generate the thrill of the chase. Part of that magic comes from a nifty little gear box and corresponding dice. As you switch gears, you’ll gain access to larger dice with larger values that will let you travel faster around the track. When you think about it though, it’s the corners that make the game truly shine.

Dipping My Toes into the Star Wars: Imperial Assault Campaign

Didn't actually take any campaign pictures, so I'll use the tutorial/skirmish ones I have handy
Didn’t actually take any campaign pictures, so I’ll use the tutorial/skirmish ones I have handy

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been gradually getting acclimated to Star Wars: Imperial Assault. In my first post, I covered my time with the tutorial. Next, I wrote about my experience playing Skirmish matches. Today, I’ll cover the little bit I’ve experienced with the Campaign. For players curious about diving deep into the lore and ground-based combat of Star Wars, maybe these impressions will sway you on a purchase of this game.
