How Much Would it Cost Me to Complete One of My Pokemon TGC Sets?

Pokemon cards are generally released in sets. Sizes can vary wildly, but major sets are usually comprised of 150-to-200 cards. How much would it cost me to complete one?

For the purposes of this discussion, let’s focus on the Battle Styles set. It contains a total of 183 cards. 142 of these cards are functionally unique, while 41 are functional duplicates with unique visual treatments, such as alternate art, rainbow rares, and golden rares.

Not including duplicates, I currently have 95 cards within the Battle Styles set. How much did it cost me to get here? And how much more would it cost me to complete the set?

I May Have Bought More Pokemon Cards…

Having recently started building Pokemon card decks, it became fairly evident that we was short on trainer cards that would have gone a long way towards making these decks flow better. Furthermore, I wanted to add a few more V and VMax cards to expand our options and complete any loose evolution chains we currently had.

With a trip downtown coming up, I figured it would be a great time to order singles from my favourite local game store from the website and pick them up while I’m in the city.

I did order some singles…and some other stuff. Here’s what I got!

My Biggest Pulls from the Chilling Reign Set of Pokemon Cards

40 packs later, it’s time for me to chill on Chilling Reign. Fueled by off the strength of my newfound excitement for the game and the allure of potentially pulling a golden shiny Snorlax card, I made the bold move of buying a booster box. Kudos to my mother-in-law for giving Steff and I four extra packs to work with for a total of 40!

Before shifting our focus on the upcoming Evolving Skies set, let’s look back on some of the best cards pulled from our booster packs!

The Experience of Owning and Opening a Pokemon Trading Card Game Booster Box

Booster boxes are designed for retailers to have a display of card packs that they can then sell individually. They were not originally intended for individual consumers to buy a whole box for themselves, nor were they originally intended for content creators to buy dozens of boxes to then plow through them on stream with others waiting for that ultra rare card reveal.

With all of the hoopla surrounding Pokemon card collecting, it’s easy to lose sight of what booster boxes are intended for. And for serious collectors, they really don’t care what their original purpose was if it means they can get a lot of cards at a discounted rate.

During my initial wave of fandom, I decided to order a booster box for myself. Today, Steff and I open the final pack. Unless we open a god pack, I think I’ve seen enough to document the experience of owning one of these monstrosities.

Marvel Dice Masters: Uncanny X-Men Overload!

Marvel Dice Masters: Uncanny X-Men Booster BoxHoly cow! Steff and I recently exchanged anniversary presents, and I opened up an entire Marvel Dice Masters: Uncanny X-Men booster box! According to my research, there’s 90 booster packs in each, which means there’s 180 dice and cards in there! If that ain’t love, then I don’t know what love is. Thank you love! I hope the gift I gave to you was equally awesome!

I probably would have torn through all of them by now, but Steff’s condition is that I’m only allowed to open one per day. I’m probably going to document this process in some way, though I haven’t figured it out just yet. Stay tuned!
