Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot Review

Killer Bunnies Quest for the Magic Carrot

Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot is a very apt name for this silly action game. Each player is on a mission to use their killer bunnies to find this magic carrot. The “killer” part refers to the fact that rival bunnies are trying to kill you so they can get the magic carrot for themselves, and it’s probably in your best interest to return the favour. There are aspects of this game that deserve merit, though other parts of it can be real deal-breakers for some.

Love Letter: Batman Edition Review

Without context, Love Letter: Batman Edition sounds like the worst game ever. Who would want to play a game where you write love letters to the Dark Knight? Luckily for us, this isn’t the premise. Instead of sending romantic notes to a princess, which was the goal of the game this is based on, this edition requires players to apprehend Gotham’s fiercest foes. Awkward name aside, should you and your friends aid Batman on this adventure?

Analyzing the ICv2 Board Game and Card Game Sales Charts for Q1 2015

I recently discovered the phenomenal work of ICv2. They do a tremendous job of covering the business side of geeky things, such as board games and comic books. One of the things that caught my eye in particular are their board game sales charts. While their list may not be perfect, it’s probably as close as we’ll realistically get to how these games are performing compared to one another. Let’s take a peek at their list of best selling board games and card games of spring 2015!

Hanabi Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

Hanabi

Years ago, we foolishly passed up on Hanabi, choosing to buy Card of the Dead instead. That game was a complete bust. Today, we’ve righted our wrongs by playing and loving Hanabi. This cooperative card game about players helping each other build the perfect fireworks display is extremely clever, easy to learn and highly engaging for everyone involved. Since you have to rely on others to give you the information you need, every move has the intensity of someone cutting a wire from a bomb. Any time we have a board gaming occasion, this one always comes with us. This is as close to a must-have game for pretty much anyone and I can’t recommend it enough!

Hanabi Review

Years ago, when we were just starting to buy board games, a representative from Snakes & Lattes recommended two games to us: Card of the Dead and Hanabi. One is a game about fighting zombies in the apocalypse, while the other is a game about sequencing fireworks. Naturally, we chose the zombie game, because how could a game about fireworks top zombies? Well, Card of the Dead turned out to be a dud that collected dust on our shelf until we eventually gave it away.

Meanwhile, Hanabi became a runaway smash hit, selling a ton of copies for R&R Games and even winning the prestigious Speil des Jahres award for game of the year. Recognizing that we blew it, I always wondered what would have been had we chosen Hanabi on that fateful day. After a few recent plays with this fireworks-based game, we probably would have been a lot happier.

In Response to “Card games and board games are dying out, and it’s no great loss”

Recently, a published article on The Telegraph sent board gaming enthusiasts into a tizzy. Written by Harry Wallop, he wrote a scathing piece on the hobby called “Card games and board games are dying out, and it’s no great loss“. As a huge fan of board games, it’s tough for me to not just angrily lash out, but I’ll try and tackle this with a cool head.

Board Game Night Playlist: Introductory Dungeon Crawls

Dungeons & Dragons is one of the most influential games of all-time. It’s also one of the most intimidating. The game features a ton of rules and requires a group of players to have at least one that’s designated as Dungeon Master, which is a very difficult role to fill. To this day, I’ve never played actual D&D before and I’m not sure if I ever will.

With that said, that doesn’t mean I’ve been deprived of the dungeon crawling experience. D&D might be the original, though its core concepts have been streamlined, simplified, or just straight-up copied a countless number of times. This Board Game Night Playlist features dungeon raiding games that are fine-tuned for casual players to get their fix. Now let’s gear up and head into this introductory dungeon crawl playlist!

Just Desserts Review

Just Desserts puts you in the shoes of a waiter at a specialty dessert restaurant. Customers are looking to satisfy their sweet tooth and it’s up to you to serve them with the delicious treats from the kitchen. Competing against other waiters, you want to be the first person to serve five people of different suits or three people of the same suit to win. I bought the game off the strength of its core concept, but does it have what it takes to satisfy my taste for a small card game?

Pandemic: Contagion Review

I have to admit that the thought of role-playing as a disease has never crossed my mind. Be that as it may, I’ll certainly give it a shot if the name Pandemic is involved. Pandemic: Contagion is the most dramatic spin-off of the Pandemic series to-date, as players control the diseases in an attempt to kill the most people. Are things more entertaining on the germy side?

Board Game Night Playlist: Superhero Games

Whether it be on the silver screen, Saturday morning cartoons, or lunchboxes, superheroes have existed outside of the comic book pages for almost as long as they’ve existed. I, for one, knew of Spider-Man and the X-Men first from their cartoon exploits, while my first real exposure to Batman was from the Michael Keaton movie back in 1989. Superheroes have also had a presence in the board game space for decades, though the vast majority of these efforts were shoddy cash grabs.

Some of the modern superhero games still are poor titles that are excuses to make a quick buck, though both DC and Marvel have made honest efforts to improve their board game portfolios to the point where they both have games that are great by any measure. If you’re in the mood to live the superhero experience in tabletop gaming form, try these ones out!
