Return of the Raging Demon

Years ago, I publicly dumped Akuma. Despite having invested hundreds of hours into the character, I felt like our relationship had run its course. I hit a ceiling with that character that was lower than where I wanted to go, so I thought it would be best to move on. As I’ve said multiple times on this blog in the following years, dropping Akuma for Rose was the best thing I ever did in a fighting game. Since dropping Akuma, I’ve leveled up to the point where my Rose is currently ranked 3rd in the world on PSN, which is a milestone that I wouldn’t have foreseen in my wildest dreams.

Was the dramatic turnaround all due to the character change? Part of it certainly is. However, having gone back to watch some old video and having played with Akuma recently, it’s becoming more apparent that much of my success now comes from personal growth.

Ultra Street Fighter IV Rose Combo Video

In live matches, I tend to play a very conservative Rose. I generally go for simple combos, as I’m confident in my ability to land them consistently. However, I use this opportunity to show off a few more fancy things in my bag of tricks. I’m considering making more combo videos with different characters as a means of not only creating more content for the site, but also as a means of better learning the game as a whole. Let me know if you enjoyed the video and if you’re interested in more!

m3gatron427 (Zangief) vs. jettFTW (Rose) in Ultra Street Fighter IV

A 5000+ BP Zangief player immediately decides to take a holier-than-thou approach to Rose’s fireballs by simply blocking them until he loses. He quickly follows up his loss with the hateful message below.

photo(47)I’ll gladly take the free win and the Battle Points, but I won’t accept anyone trying to paint me as the bad guy because I didn’t follow some non-existent set of fighting game gentleman’s rules. It’s people like this who also foolishly believe that throws are cheap and should not be used in any fighting game ever. These gentleman’s rules DO NOT EXIST. You play to win and that’s that. We live in a world where TAC infinite combos in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 are deemed legal by the biggest fighting game tournament in the world. A world where a glitch became heavily used in Capcom vs. SNK 2 because it made the game better.

Furthermore, we live in a world where Zangief can beat Rose! Watch the above video where Aquasilk overcomes any on-paper match-up advantages I had to beat me into submission. M3gatron427’s refusal to fight only further amplifies his ignorance and lack of match-up knowledge.

This is fighting games in 2014. Everything is fair game and anything that isn’t gets patched out. If you want to get under my skin in Ultra Street Fighter IV, don’t throw a match and then send a salty text message as a parting shot. Those childish antics nothing. If you really want to grind my gears, beat me in the game.

Ryu (|H|akai) vs. Rolento (jettFTW) in Ultra Street Fighter IV

Don’t judge a player by their Battle Points. |H|akai doesn’t have many, but this Ryu player clearly knew what they were doing. He convincingly zoned out my Rolento and took this match to the absolute limit.

Ultra Street Fighter IV and the Thirst For Points

In the online world of Street Fighter IV, there are two primary metrics that define your skill level: Player Points and Battle Points. Player Points (also known as PP) is a numerical score that indicates your overall skill as a player, regardless of which character you choose. Battle Points (or BP for short) is a character-specific score that rates your ability with that character. At the end of each match, players earn or lose a varying amount of PP and BP based on whether they won or lost, as well as the point differential between opponents. For instance, if a player with a low PP beats a player with a high PP, then the winner in this case would get a lot of points. However, if the tables were turned and the player with a lot of PP beat a player with a low score, then their payout would be far less fruitful. From there, everyone’s PP and BP scores are compiled into regional and global leaderboards.

As if the combat in Street Fighter IV wasn’t addictive enough, this meta element of the experience has only made the game that much harder to shake. Within days of Ultra Street Fighter IV‘s release and the resetting of scores, I found myself hunkered down in front of the television in hopes of earning more points.
