The Backlog Versus Reality

Backlog

This is one of my backlog shelves. I strategically position them in a way that it is easiest for me to reach while I’m sitting at my gaming desk. I like to think that having those particular games sit in prime shelf space serve as a reminder that I want to get around to these eventually. Between physical and digital releases, I have a few dozen unplayed games lying around.

Having the luxury to play something new to me at a moment’s notice is nice. However, there is a certain point where the expectation of completing a backlog becomes unrealistic.

Out Now: The PlayStation 4

A new era in video games has begun!

The PlayStation 4 is out now, and there are a lot of happy gamers out there messing around with the latest and greatest in gaming tech. If you’re don’t have yours, it’s not too late to order one from Amazon through In Third Person!

Admittedly, they’re probably sold out by now. But it might be easier to order one through Amazon and have it shipped to you as soon as it’s available rather than making a ton of calls to local stores or standing in line. Though I may have a vested interest in this transaction, I still think that ordering through me is a great idea. 😉

The Opportunity Budget

As an advertising industry professional by day, I hear my clients sometimes refer to something they call the opportunity budget. This bucket of money is meant to fund other marketing communications initiatives that are outside of the core plan. For instance, this could be used to promote a product that wasn’t originally going to get any marketing support. Or, this could be used to provide additional support to an existing plan.

As a gaming enthusiast, this concept is one that I apply to my spending habits. There are games that I know I’ll be buying within a given year that I can plan to purchase when the time comes. Then there are the games that I buy that deviate from that plan. In particular, these opportunity cost games are titles that I pick up as a means of expanding my horizons.

Out Now – Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies

Gaming’s favourite attorney returns in Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies on the Nintendo 3DS. While he’s made cameo appearances in the more recent Ace Attorney games, this will be his first starring role in quite some time. As a huge fan of his original trilogy, I’m picking this up as quickly as I can.

Unlike previous entries in the series, this one is not available in a physical format. Instead, you can only download it through the Nintendo 3DS eShop. I personally would prefer to have a physical copy, but if the business realities are such that this is the only way we can get it, I’d prefer that than not having it at all.

Not having played it yet, I can’t say if this is any good yet. However, I highly recommend the original trilogy to anyone, even if you don’t like point-and-click adventure games. I don’t like the genre as a whole, but the Phoenix Wright games are so well written and fun to play that they easily overcome my criticisms of the genre. Tracking down DS copies may prove difficult, though you can try out the HD remake for free on iOS right now if you want. Be on the lookout for impressions from me on Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies soon!

Target is the Secret Best Video Game Store in Canada

Earlier this year, Target made its debut in Canada. At first, I was pretty disappointed with their video games section. It’s selection is smaller than Walmart’s and most of its games rarely ever go on sale. By virtue of living beside one, I would oftentimes end up at Target for other reasons, though I’d always leave their gaming department empty-handed.

But that all changed when the orange clearance stickers started showing up. To my surprise, Target began blowing out their games more aggressively than any other retailer I’ve ever seen.

Pick-Up Post: Fan Expo 2013 Edition

Fan Expo Swag Full

Every year, Fan Expo is especially harsh on my wallet. I rarely get access to much in the way of nerdy stuff to buy, let alone everything I could ever want in one place. This year proved extra fruitful, as I bought or got pretty much everything on my wish list and then some. In case you’re interested, here’s what I got!
