Convention Week continues! This time, less bickering! I will sit in on almost any panel offered at a convention. Here’s why!
“Would you make any droids other than R2D2?”
Having watched an expert discuss the particulars of building R2D2 droids for 45 minutes, I was curious in whether he had any ambitions of applying his incredible skills towards different types of robots. While I was expecting a simple yes or no response, his answer floored me.
Don’t remember the exact words, but the sentiment was clear. Not only did he have zero interest in making other kinds of robots, but he was so fully invested in making R2D2 droids that the idea of shifting his talents to anything other than that was ludicrous. Even without any ambitions of creating robots of my own, it’s these types of moments that make it a pleasure for me to sit in on a panel about virtually anything at conventions.
Convention Week continues! Heading out to your first convention soon? Maybe these tips will help you get the most out of your event!
My first convention experience was a bumpy ride. Not fully understanding how everything worked, I squandered too much of my time wandering aimlessly. Though I’ve got convention planning down to a science nowadays, I still regret for all of the things I missed during that first Fan Expo Canada that I attended.
If you’ve planning on going to your first event, maybe some of these words of wisdom will help you make the most out of your adventure!
Welcome to Convention Week! We start things off with a subject that has been an annoyance since the very first convention I’ve ever been to: the line to play video games.
Each year, Fan Expo hosts an exclusive period for patrons with a deluxe pass or higher. If you have one, you can get into the show two hours early. As a deluxe pass holder, I use this time to run straight to the Nintendo booth every year. With the way things work out, this is the only time I have to play video games at this show.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, tens of thousands converged on the Metro Toronto Convention centre for Fan Expo Canada. This my 10th show and the event continues to be a highlight in my pop culture calendar.
If you’ve been following along on my Instagram or Twitter, you’ve probably seen most of what I’m posting here. But I will try and add some commentary to some of the cool things I saw at this year’s show!
I’m not a Star Trek fan. While I enjoyed the first two Chris Pine movies, the franchise’s particular flavour of sci-fi wasn’t my cup of tea. And yet around this time in 2010, I found myself dying of laughter as William Shatner went on a hilarious rant about his time working on the show. Even with no real background on his work or his life, I was moved by the sheer spectacle of this famous guy with a microphone on stage. I still haven’t really delved into the world of Star Trek, but I’ll never forget that one night at Fan Expo Canada.
Up until my wife and I visited our first convention with that William Shatner panel among many other attractions, video games, board games, and other nerdy pursuits (TM) have mostly been a pastime I’d enjoy alone or with a small group of friends. By attending my first convention, it opened the door to celebrate our shared fandoms with a community. My life hasn’t been the same since.
Overwatch was HOT at Fan Expo Canada 2018! While Jenna, Randy and I squad up and take on the world, we talk about the Overwatch cosplay we saw at the show, merch Jett bought, and share our impressions on many unreleased games we got to play! This includes Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Tetris Effect, Starlink, Diablo 3 on Switch and more!
For the 9th year in a row, my family, friends, and I embarked on a journey to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre for Fan Expo Canada 2018! It’s always a joy to be one with fellow fans and this year was no exception. In no particular order, here are some of my gaming highlights from the show! Continue reading →
For the 9th consecutive year, my wife and I will be making the trek downtown for Fan Expo 2018! Canada’s biggest celebration of all things nerdy and pop culture returns to Toronto, and I’m excited to come back for another round. Here’s a few things I’m excited to experience this time around!
