The Xbox 360 controller is one of my favourites. It’s only real downside in my book was the crappy d-pad, which is poorly located and sorely unable to provide players with precision movement. Did Microsoft learn their lesson with the Xbox One controller?
At Fan Expo 2013, I got to play a pre-release build of Killer Instinct on the Xbox One. Though I wish I could have played the game on a fightstick, it did give me an opportunity to get a feel for the new Xbox One controller and my first new taste of Killer Instinct in over a decade.
Microsoft’s recent announcement of the Kinect no longer being required to make the Xbox One work is the latest in an unprecedented series of flip-flopping before the console’s release. On one hand, it’s great that they’re proactively addressing many of the issues that more discerning consumers have with the platform. However, this sequence of events also highlights how off-base the original vision for the console was while giving me cause for concern going forward.
After weeks of backlash, Microsoft pulled arguably the biggest about face in gaming history by announcing the fact that they were removing all of their new DRM policies from the Xbox One. While this is great news overall for consumers, this whole debacle has gone a long way towards diminishing my goodwill with them.
