Test Driving The DualShock 4

DualShock 4

Thought the PlayStation 4 isn’t set for release for another few weeks, the DualShock 4 is available now at certain retailers. I scooped one up for multiple reasons. For one, eating the cost of an extra controller now eases the burden on my wallet later. Also, it turns out that the new controller is compatible with some PlayStation 3 games. Though I’ve been fortunate enough to try the controller before, this was my first time getting to test it out on multiple games for an extended period of time.

Apparently, it works with certain PlayStation 3 games right now. I’ll try and provide some impressions soon!

With Watch Dogs Delayed to 2014, What Do Play On My Launch PlayStation 4 Now?

Mere weeks before its release, Ubisoft pulled the plug on its November launch plans for Watch Dogs and bumped the game into 2014. As someone with a PlayStation 4 pre-order, this is a real bummer. This was going to be my definitive launch-day experience, not to mention the only game in the lineup that I had any real interest in.

Hands-On: The PlayStation 4 Controller

I’ve never been a fan of the DualShock. Despite it becoming the archetype that almost every controller has followed since, I never liked the placement of the left analog stick. Despite keeping the same general form factor, the PlayStation 4 DualShock is a notably improved controller.

Hands-On With Driveclub

Driving games are synonymous with console launches. Most console manufacturers use them to demonstrate the raw horsepower of their platform in a way that appeals to a wide audience. Gran Turismo would have been the obvious choice, though Gran Turismo 6 is set for a PlayStation 3 release later this year. Probably realizing that GT wasn’t going to work out in time for the launch of the PlayStation 4, Sony has greenlit Driveclub from the makers of Motorstorm.

I got to play a pre-release build at Fan Expo, which consisted of one time trial race. It was enough time to me to realize that this isn’t for me, and that it may not be the next gen racing game to beat at launch.

Hands-On With Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

After the last two disappointing console releases, my perception of the Assassin’s Creed franchise is in the toilet. The series has hit the point of saturation where the annual release schedule not only wears me out, but the quality of the product suffers for it. In particular, Assassin’s Creed III was a buggy mess that still would have fallen short of the mark had it been bug-free.

I want to believe that a jump to next gen is the kick in the pants that this franchise needs, but so far, this doesn’t look like it.
