I’ll Be at Hamilton Comic Con Today!

Excited to be hopping in the car this morning and driving over to The Hammer for my first ever Hamilton Comic Con! I’ll be there primarily in support of my wife and sister-in-law, as they’re set to compete in their first ever cosplay masquerade. Wishing them both the best of luck! However, when they’re not in the heat of competition, I’ll definitely enjoy everything the show has to offer, from the shopping, to the panels, and more! In particular, I’m still debating whether I want to get a picture taken with one of my all-time favourite wrestlers, Rob Van Damn.

I’ll try my best to post images and video from the show on my Instagram so you can follow along. Maybe I’ll see you there even? I’m gonna guess no, but who knows!

Fan Expo Canada 2017 Recap

IMG_1393

As much as Fan Expo tries its best to provide attendees with wall-to-wall excitement, the likelihood of meeting everyone’s expectations in terms of personal taste is a tough order. This year was a year where that came to light for me. With a list of guests that didn’t appeal all that much, combined with a short shopping list, and I had my concerns that this would be a weak show. While it ended up being not as entertaining for me in years past, I did find enough to keep me entertained for the most part.

I’m Going to Fan Expo 2015!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for Toronto fans of all things nerdy, as Fan Expo Canada returns! If memory serves me correctly, this will be my 6th time going to the show. Here’s what I’m excited for this year!

Going to See Marvel Universe Live Tonight

Taking place tonight at the Air Canada Centre is Marvel Universe Live! This live-action stage show aims to bring the action of the comic books to life with choreographed combat, stunts, and lots of pyrotechnics. Very excited to see a stage show of this scale come together. Look out for my thoughts on the show in the near future! Excelsior!

I Love Teen Titans Go!

I woke up early one morning in a Florida hotel room. With some time to kill before Steff and I we continued on with our vacation, I turned on the TV and flipped through the channels. By the time we were both dressed and ready to go, I struggled to rip myself away from the screen. I had just discovered Teen Titans Go! and I didn’t want to stop.

We Stand on Guard #1

Just wanted to chime in real quick to recommend issue #1 of We Stand on Guard by Brian K. Vaughan. Set 100 years in the future, a group of Canadian freedom fighters try to defend their home turf against the invading United States. As one of my favourite writers, he continues to dazzle here with great characters and a great concept for a story that explores the relationship between these neighbouring countries. It also doesn’t hurt that it pulls my patriotic heart strings in a medium that rarely explores north of the border. Can’t wait to see what else is in store for this new series!

The Resurrection of Archie

How do you keep Archie relevant for modern times? Maybe more importantly, how do you do that without alienating the dedicated fanbase that loves it as-is? This is probably the question that Archie Comic Publications has been wrestling with since the franchise was established in the 1940s. Even when I had a brief love affair with Archie digests in the early 90s as a kid, I always thought of them as entertainment aimed at my grandmother.

From a distance, I’ve seen digest covers that feature the gang playing video games, to weird zombie spin-offs and Predator crossovers, right down to the actual death of Archie in Life with Archie #36. Having read those final issues involving his demise, it wasn’t enough to shake my perceptions of this being an antiquated franchise.

Fast forward to the present, and sitting in my house is a copy of Archie #1 by Mark Waid and Fiona Staples. Sporting a modern look from the artist behind Saga, the cover alone makes it look like the most daring attempt at a reboot yet. After reading it, I’m not sure if my grandma would have enjoyed this, but I’m actually taken aback at how strong of a first issue this was.

The Runaways

At some point in your life, you’ve probably felt like your parents were evil. Maybe they didn’t buy you the toy you wanted, scolded you for staying out past curfew or disapproved of your current love interest. In the moment, they were the worst, but you usually got over it and realized your parents were usually just trying to do the right thing. But what do you do if they’re literally super villains? This is the conundrum that Alex, Nico, Gertrude, Chase, Karolina and Molly faced in the first arc of Runaways by Marvel Comics. This initial conflict would be the start of a great adventure for some of Marvel’s unlikeliest superheroes.
