Best Pokemon TCG Online Codes to Buy (and Some to Avoid)

If you’re looking to supercharge your Pokemon TCG Online experience with more cards or better cards, there are online retailers out there that sell codes to unlock booster packs, cards, and accessories among other digital goods. I regularly buy codes from Potown Store and some of my purchases have greatly increased my enjoyment of the game.

That being said, not all of the items available for purchase are going to provide the bang-for-your-buck that you might be looking for. While everyone’s wants and needs are different, I’m going to make recommendations for new players just starting out, as well as those who are looking to get foundational pieces for great custom decks that are otherwise difficult to pull from booster packs.

Without further ado, here’s my list of Pokemon TCG Online codes to purchase (and which ones to avoid)!

Buying Pokemon TCG Online Codes From a Third-Party Site

(NOTE: This is not an ad or paid sponsorship for PoTown Store. Just documenting my personal experience with the site. Also should note that your results may vary. Also worth noting that before you purchase online codes from anywhere, please do as much research as you can beforehand so that you can make an informed purchase.)

The synergy between the physical and digital versions of the Pokemon Trading Card Game make things a bit weird. While the physical game can be enjoyed without ever touching the digital game, players of the digital game need to buy sealed Pokemon Trading Card Game products to unlock cards.

But what if you only want to play the online game? Buying decks and cards is particularly expensive if you only want the codes within. Also, if you have no interest or space to store physical cards, it’s an extra burden to consider in order to play a video game.

Though I wasn’t actively looking for a solution to this conundrum, I found at least one option that worked for me.

Aspects of the Pokemon Trading Card Game I Enjoy

From JRPG-style turn-based battles to match 3 puzzle games, the experience of Pokemon battling each other has been translated into basically every game genre. My favourite of the bunch? Tabletop card game.

Yes, I understand that there’s a little bit of recency bias at play. I only started playing Pokemon Trading Card Game a few months ago. Even so, the way in which I have invested my time and brain power towards playing the game, buying the cards, and understand the nuances of combat is beyond anything I’ve put into any other Pokemon game.

Here are the aspects of the Pokemon Trading Card Game experience that I find incredibly captivating!

The Pleasure and Pain of Theme Deck Matchmaking in Pokemon TCG Online

The fundamental challenge with collectible card games is that your ceiling as a player is predicated by the cards you have. Even the best players will lose to average players if the power gap between decks is wide enough.

For newbies, the struggle is even worse. The combination of being short on game knowledge and powerful cards is an incredibly steep (and expensive) hole to climb out of. As a newcomer to Pokemon TCG Online, my pre-made decks would routinely get stomped out by players who had every GX/V/VMax card imaginable. Above and beyond learning how to play the game, it’s going to take some combination of time and money – probably lots of both – to avoid losing every match in Standard or Expanded format.

Thankfully, there exists salvation for newcomers, scrubs, and those who want to play Pokemon TCG Online with a more rigid set of balance boundaries. If this sounds more up your alley, then the Theme format is your battlefield of choice.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Online Review

Despite the obvious benefits that come with the digital adaptation of the Pokemon Trading Card Game, it feels like fans see it as an afterthought. At its core, the appeal for players and collectors is the experience of having physical cards. There’s a joy that comes with having them on display, kept safely in a binder, or held in your hand just before playing them on the board. Even when The Pokemon Company gives codes with every physical product to unlock cards and other accessories in the video game, codes are sold for dirt cheap or even simply given away.

For collectors with zero interest in playing the game in any form, the existence of an online version is a moot point. But if you have even the slightest interest in playing the game, Pokemon TCG shouldn’t be ignored.
